P0430 on my 277k 4Runner

OK, About 2 years ago I replaced the O2 sensors on the drivers side. Now I'm getting this code. Just home from taking my daughter to college with the truck loaded to the gills and a roof rack and got almost 20 mpg cruising at 75!!

The 400 mile drive to school there were no codes. As soon as I got in town they popped up. Before we left for home I cleared them and as soon as I was in city driving they popped up again.

At 277k I know I won't be replacing the converters, just go with the sensors on the passenger side and cross my fingers???

Any thoughts??? Thanks.

you could try with the a/f sensor. but I think it's the CAT. I understand it's at 277k now. it's your call. it's either you get another used car and don't know what the problem is or just replace the CAT and continue using it until it dies. I guess you know better since you know your truck better.

Just looked on Rock Auto, I see the cat's are in the $200 range. I thought they were much more.

If I'm correct, single cat each side??

yup, single cat each side. cheaper if you get the aftermarket but expensive if you get the OEM.

the only problem with the aftermarket is you might get the same code but I guess with that mileage, it's worth a try.

Replaced both of my downstream o2 sensors on my 315k 4runner cause I was having the same problem. No change, code still there. Skimped out and a had a buddy write my smog off for me, still cost me $300

If it truly is the Cat and not the sensor then you can use a sparkplug antifouler to push the sensor further away from the exhaust stream which will read a leaner condition and satisfy the ecu's parameters. I've done this on a few Hondas/Toyota and it's always worked.

I have the same mileage on my 03 and had the same code pop up on mine and purchased a $9 anti fouler popped that bad boy in and never an issue since and I went and had it smogged here in CA where it's the strictest and passed with flying colors.

Beats buying ..
O2 sensors 150
Cats 500
Paying 300 to pass ..
All things you can throw your money at with a maybe result.

Mmmmm ..$9 bucks runs perfect, no codes and passes smog.
