P0710 Check Engine Light, Advice Needed

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone else has seen this code on an '04 Limited with the V8?

I got this code after parking my truck for a week while I was on a business trip. 15 minutes after driving away from the airport it came on. Of course it turned on the VSC and TSC lights. So when I got home I pulled the code I got this code on my scan tool. I clear the code and the light, but the VSC and TSC come back on as soon as I put the truck into gear.

So I search, and search for anything in regards to this "Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor Bank A" and I cannot find anything on it for my model year truck. I go to my local Toyota dealership and with my VIN are not able to find a sensor on the transmission at all for temp sensing. The parts guy calls his contact at Toyota and they say that it is the temp sensor on the engine up by the thermostat. I have the part on order but am not completely convinced that this is going to be the fix.

Basically I am hoping someone out there has had the same issue to provide some input.

Did a quick search because I haven't seen that code before - I found this on a tundra forum:

According to the FSM, the P0710 code IS NOT an ATF OVERTEMP condition, it's a circuitry problem where the ECM is seeing the following:
Either (a) or (b) is detected momentary within 0.5 sec. when neither P0712 or P0713 is not detected
(a) ATF temperature sensor resistance is less than 79 Ohms.
(b) ATF temperature sensor resistance is more than 156K Ohms.

The P0712 code means the ATF temperature sensor resistance is less than 79 Ohms for 0.5 sec. or more

The P0713 code means the ATF temperature sensor resistance is more than 156K Ohms for 0.5 sec. or more

The causes for the P0710 code are listed as:
(1) Open or short in ATF temperature sensor circuit, or
(2) Defective ATF temperature sensor, or
(3) Defective ECM

No idea if it's the same as the 4Runner but I'm sure it's similar. I imagine [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] would be able to clarify and help out much more than I can!

To get rid of the VSC lights you need to do a zero point calibration, I have posted how to do it, just do a search and it will come up.
Check your fluid level then do it.

I'm not really sure where the trans sensor is. Common sense would dictate that it would be on the trans....but the whole common sense approach has failed me in the past!

Hopefully someone else can chime in that knows a bit more.

I have not checked the fluid yet. I am just going to do a drain and fill because it is due anyway. But I did clear the vsc and trac lights using this video How to do a zero point calibration on LEXUS AND TOYOTA VSC ,TRAC OFF - YouTube The pins that I used were 4 and 14 being the only difference in the execution of this video.

Time will tell if my code comes back. I am still wondering why I tripped a code to begin with.

No problem that is what we are all here for, and was easy as heck wasn't it.
I do it everytime a code comes up and takes less then 5 minutes.
Just think what the dealer would have charged to do that.

The tranny temp sensor is underneath the tranny case, on the passenger side.
Easiest way to find it is look for the tranny fluid cooler return line under the rad and follow it to the tranny. The sensor is threaded into a union which is threaded into the tranny. Should be the same location on both 4speed and 5speed trannies

Definitely did not see a sensor anywhere near the return line. Just got the P0713 on my 06 v8 4wd. Comes on after reset if I drive longer than 20 minutes or so

I guessing a bad transmission temperature sensor, there are other things it could be all related to transmission temperature but I would start with replacing the sensor, if the code come back after clearing it.

I’ve cleared it numerous times and it always comes back. So one thing I did confirm driving around looking at live data on techstream is that when I start it cold, sensor 1 reads at ambient temperature. It shows it warming up and around 120-130 degrees, it drops to -40, which what I’ve read points to an open in the circuit. Then it throws the code shortly after that.

My best guess right now is that once the sensor reaches a certain temp, it stops working.


EDIT:
Found the problem. Techstream is a pain to easily run and check live data so I set up custom user defined PID's on OBD Fusion to read ATF 1 and ATF 2. Sure enough sensor 1 kept reading -40. I took my phone under the car while it was off and ignition on and wiggled the harness connector. readings would come in and out. I disconnected the whole harness from every trans sensor so I could pull it down enough for me to work on. Sure enough, a wire had soft severed off the plug. I believe this happened when I did the engine replacement. I pulled the plug apart, re crimped the wire to the needle, reassembled, and had a happy sensor. All good now.

After some searching this is as close to my issues I could get without posting a new thread. I'm getting "P0713 Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor A Circuit High". I've cleared it and performed the zero point calibration but it came back within minutes. I performed a drain and fill and the trans still shifts like butter and have driven with this code for almost a year now so, it's time to replace the sensor.

My question is, where is this sensor located and/or does someone have a part number?

Myself if your gas mileage is not falling off and your truck is running good, i would quit worring about them stupid sensor codes, there to make people go crazy and spend a lot of unneeded money trying to make them go away.

Well as much as I love that mindset I can't stand having a CEL, the little things drive me nuts. Plus, I can't pass state inspection and get new tags with an active trouble code here in Oregon. So, I'm stuck chasing down this P0713 and getting it fixed.

Sadly you reside in a state about as bad as California, so you have no choice but to keep hunting for the stupid sensor causing the problem.

Plus, if something is broken, it should be fixed, simple as that. I just wanna fix it but can't get answers short of paying a shop to do it and I haven't paid a shop to do work since I was a teenager.
