Padding on Trim Panels

Hello all,

I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me out with a question about the purpose of the foam padding on the back of trim panels.

Recently, my vehicle was parked in a location that flooded (see picture), and the whole floor board was filled with water. The carpet was ruined and had to be removed, and much of the padding behind the trip panels got wet and now smells terrible (see second picture).

Does anyone know the purpose of this padding? I was planning on replacing it with sound deadener (such as dynamat, kilmat, etc.), but I know the sound deadener is thinner than the padding that was originally attached. I would think this could cause some rattling.

Sound deadening/control (i.e. vibration control). Dynomat will perform better than the oem matting.
