Pads and rotor suggestions?

I have the top napa pads that are hybrid ceramic and ? But they hold up plus when they go bad you just bring them back and swap for new ones free
 
Update- Went with EBC rotors, green stuff rears and yellow stuff fronts. Wow! They are awesome. And quiet- not a squeal yet in a couple hundred miles. They had a soft- anti squeal backing that sticks to the pad, then I used the two more shims that were on the OEM pads- so triple layer protection. Made it a tight fit, but it all fit back in.

Here's the dreaded rear parking brake shoes- I had to back off the adjusters all the way, then drive in 10mm bolts through the threaded holes to push the rotors off.

working great, for 10 whole days now !
no noise, good pedal, quick to stop, and no dust (yet)
 
My 2006 just flipped past 100,000 miles about two weeks ago and when I went to get my state inspection this week they told me my front pads would need to be replaced sooner than later.

I went ahead and ordered rotors and pads for only the front since they said the rear brakes were still good. I got some Centric Premium rotors with the e-coating and Akebono ProAct Ultra Premium pads.

Question before I start on this project: do I need to get shims separately? It looks like the pads already have a shim on the back of them, but since this will be the first time I've done a brake job on my own I figured I'd check.

YotaDriver: that's the exact combo I just bought! I did the same set-up on my Gen3 and loved it. As far as the shims go... the pads come with them and typically don't require anything else, but after reading Zimm's post above, I'm thinking of adding a little something extra. I might ask around to see if anyone carries a rubbery-type shim that would really absorb any vibrations.

Yeah, I read his post which got me to thinking. I got my stuff through Amazon and they've got shims, too. Are you planning on changing your brake fluid when you do the rest of the work?

Mine came with two shims per pad, flat plain one and one with long cutouts in it that rests against the back of the brake pad. Used the special grease on all 4 sides of the 2 shims.
 
Use the stock two shims that come off the old pads and put them on top of the new pads. new pads should already have a backing to them that is something other than just cast iron.

Yeah, the new pads do have a smoother looking component on the back of them but I'll re-use the existing shims, as well. Thanks for the reply.

Choosing the best pad combination for your needs is always critical, but having a complete system is better (ss lines, good brake fluid, etc). For me I like the carbotech pad materials for my truck. In the end with brake components you get what you pay for. I've seen those autozone cheapo rotors wrap within a few months using their pads. In the end there is never a "perfect" pad. My current setup is a TRD pad with centric rotors in addition to my ss lines and dot 4 fluid. And it meets my needs well. For most my setup is extreme.

Just wondering which specific stainless steel brake lines you went with? Slowly getting parts together for a full brake system maintenance and I'd like to go ahead and get the lines replaced as well.
 
Rotor size

I've been reading lots of posts about brake pads and rotors as I want to change my front again. This time I need rotors. Anyways lots of posts state sr5 for 16 inch wheels. However I bought my 2005 sr5 new and it had many of the sport upgrades on it. In fact everything but hood scoop. I have 17 inch wheels from the dealer as an upgrade. I will find out soon what size rotor I have as I am curious from all the posts I have read. So I guess what I am saying is its possible to have 17 factory rims on a sr5.
 
I know it is an old thread but wanted to see what you guys thought. I was going to order my ebb rotors and Greenstuff pads from Autoanything but they only have the Greenstuff for the rear. Should i just go ahead and get the yellow front and rear or go with yellow fronts and green rear?
 
I would go with either centric or stoptech/power slot "posh centric". from what I have seen ebc rotors wrap easily. However if you are amendment on ebc then I would use the yellow.
 
After reading this thread, I'm left with a few comments that have me scratching my head.

If you are looking to replace your brakes on your 4Runner, I would recommend a good quality rotor, and a good ceramic pad. I have had good results using Mountain rotors and Akebono pads. The Mountain rotors are made in Japan and they are an OE supplier to many Japanese auto makers. Akebono makes pads here in the US, Canada, Japan, as well as probably a few other places. If you have access to a World Pac account, you can get some great deals on both.

I used to buy a lot of Brembo rotors for various cars, but lately when I checked the boxes I see a lot of made in China labels unless it's for a performance application. If I wanted to get Chinese rotors, I would go to NAPA and save money.

Regarding slotted rotors. Do they have a place in the automotive world? Yes, the entire field of ALMS is running slotted rotors. Do they belong on a daily driven 4000+ pound SUV with all terrain tires? No. Not unless you feel like spending more money on discs, and eating up pads faster. Also, realize that a slotted rotor has less surface area for a pad to bite down on compared to a blank rotor. You need to be pushing a car pretty hard on a track using sticky tires, stiff calipers, stainless brake lines, and good fluid to see any improvement in braking with slotted rotors. Save your money.

I also would not recommend EBC for anything. I wouldn't put their pads or rotors on my mountain bike.
