Paint Colors!

We all know how bad my clear coat is. So, I finally have some money.
So it's time to decide on a color.

I haven't decided if I should go Green or Gray. I am kinda worried about the door sills being green and the truck being gray.

My favorite green color is Highland Green, Ford color. Bullit Mustang color.

My favorite gray color is Magnetic Gray Metallic, but here's the catch. I'd get it sprayed with Matte Clear.

Are there cons to Matte clear?

This will go off road once a month. Scratches don't bother me as long as they aren't SUPER deep.

re-doing the clearcoat on it would be the least expensive and would just be easier to deal with.

Just paint the car the same color, otherwise you have to do a complete teardown in order for it to look good, because likely you won't do the teardown as it takes a long time and then when you open the doors you see a different color paint than the body is.

Matte paint is color for a car in a picture, it is not a feasible day to day paint job, it gets ruined too easy.

I vote the matte gray. That looks awesome. But as johnsd90 said, you would need to teardown the car and have every single piece painted separately. And remove all trim. Look at my pictures and you can see how I had my car taken apart. It took me a couple days to do it all. Do it all yourself, because once you drop it off to be painted you have no idea what they would do even if they say they will do it. If you decide to change the color you would want to do all that because it would look silly if you didn't paint the door jambs.

If you're gonna be offloading it alot I would advise against the matte though. It will damage more easily. And you can't wax or buff it if you get scrapes.

X2 on redoing the clearcoat. It's a 16 year old truck with a dented bumper. It's not a 2012 Tacoma.

Ok so any color besides some kind of Green is out after going into the garage and examining door jambs.

Not redoing the clear coat no matter what.

This is Highland Green. I'm digging it.

Do it Imperial Jade! Its the best color.:fro: Jk. Honestly, I'd just go with Evergreen Pearl, because I think a custom color on a (mostly stock) 4runner would look funny.

You only repaint a car once.

I'll save the matte paint for a mall crawler later in life.

I know exactly what your saying, I always have to give extra thought to mods to make sure I'm actually making my truck "better" by modifying it, not just "different".

and no matter what you do plan to do a LOT of prep yourself. Every car I've seen with a cheap re-paint chips around all of the edges because they didn't pull the glass, trim etc and didn't at least scuff the edges well enough for the paint to adhere properly.

For the price of a good paint job on a vehicle the size of a 3rd gen you could actually buy one in better cosmetic shape than what you have.

Do whatever you want, but I think repainting it is throwing money down the toilet.
Who knows, maybe you've got more of it than I do.....
Unless you've got a source to help you buy supplies or help you paint it, that would be a different story.
Otherwise, you're telling me that the best use of, oh, say $2500, in your truck is a new paint job?

Why not get the hood redone for a $100 or so, then put a roof rack on it, and have a body shop take care of the little bit of oxidation in front of the sunroof, no one sees will see the roof other than you when you take these pictures.

Because the oxidation isn't just on the hood and roof, it's everywhere. It's on the doors next to the window, it's on the rear hatch a little.

I'm not spending 2500 either. If you strip everything off the body your self, you can get a high quality paint job for 1500.

Any matte paint is annoying to take care of. If I wanted a matte colored car, the only way to go for me would be vinyl wrap IMO. If I were you, I would repaint it evergreen pearl and maybe even match that license plate trim and the lower valence on the front bumper.

A color change would be cool but I'd be bothered by the door jambs and engine bay being green if I were you.

I'd strip that baby down... take everything (bumpers, glass, trim, fenders, doors, hood, etc) off, tape it all off, sand the whole thing down.

Obviously, prep, prep, prep, more prep, prime, then paint it flat black with SEM trim black.

Start with the insides of the fenders, hood, and doors, painted off of the truck.

Meanwhile, paint the jams and normally hard to reach spots on the truck.

Put the doors and fenders, etc, back on. A beautiful few coats on the whole truck.

OMFG that'd be so cool. Probably spend less than $200 in supplies and paint.

My friend and I have painted a few cars and it's damn fun!




Here's my friend Lee's car:

Started gloss black, faded paint. Looks a lot better than it really was.

Friend painted it flat black with Krylon and hated his life:

He hit a Mercedes:

He painted it again, but with some foam brushes or something. Duct tape bondo.

But, it looked horrible... so...

hours of pounding, sculpting, yelling at metal, molding, zip ties, strange bolts and general rigging later

We did this with a paint roller. I went around the trim around the car with black Krylon and clear. Came out nice... especially for the $20 or so dollars we spent.

Just imagine what we could have done with $200, no damage, and some good prep. I'd LOVE to do that.

See if I can get the door jambs painted cheap.
