You’ll never get it to look perfect on your own. But you could clean and prep it then apply primer and touch up paint to protect it from rust until you get a proper professional hood painting. The Dr Colorchip touch up paint works well for small areas.
Another option, depending on where the damage is, may be to prep it so all is smooth then get a vinyl wrap.
Nick that is a great question. I had my 4 runner serviced about a 2 months ago for the faulty fuel pump. There is no way of knowing for sure. I am going to take it in for the dealer to look at. I am doubtful they will do anything. I will see what they say and then the other option is to have my insurance look at. I will see what the dealer says...Sucks
I had my front brakes replaced 6-26-2020. How can I convince the dealership that they possible did this?
You would never get them to admit they did that. Only if you brought it to their attention before you left after your service.

Is that dark looking stain related to the missing paint? You might check to see if there are any paint recalls. Back in the 80's GM issued recalls for paint related issues on the Grand AM and Corsica models. One was for bad primer that caused the color coat to flake off and the other was for paint that faded quickly.
Both were what they called no notice recalls - which means that because they weren't safety issues, the manufacturer or dealer didn't have to notify customers. They just published the info and customers were on their own to find out. They also had time limits. I had a corsica and found out too late by a couple of months - dealer wouldn't do anything. I don't know if this practice is still happening, but it might be worth it to check.

I am going to run it through insurance and get the hood repainted. I have a deductible of 500.00. There's no way to know exactly what happened. Thanks for all the replies...
Fly I called corporate and they won't do anything as there are no paint recalls...Also, the dealership won't do anything since the warranty is out.

I am willing to bet a claybar and paint correction will take out the darker spots no problem. Then all you need to do is just have the tiny dot done PROPERLY with touch up paint. If scuffed, touch up painted, then fine sand and buff you would barely ever be able to notice that tiny spot once fixed.
Not worth having the ding on carfax, $500 out of your pocket, and the risk of the entire hood not blending well with fenders. Especially since the paint on these things chips if you look at it wrong.

I agree. The problem is where the metal is showing that whole area is bubbling up and is already ruined. I am in Nashville TN and don't have a direct contact to nor can I touch it up myself. I can take it to a body shop and see what they say.
I took it to a collision shop and they can repaint the area that is messed up vs painting the whole hood and getting into a big project. They would strip the existing clear coat off the hood, put on a new clear coat, sand and repaint the area that is messed up. He did mention fixing it myself. The cost I was quoted was $565.00. I wouldn't put it under insurance. Might be best to get some paint and touch it up myself and see what happens.

Its a nearly impossible long shot, but you could ask if they have surveillance video of their shop dating back that far. You can look to see if some moron wiped brake fluid off his hands with a rag and set it on the hood. Alternatively, see if there is a test that can be performed to identify brake fluid in the paint? Also a terribly long shot.
When it comes right down to it, talk is cheap. Walk in there politely and ask the service manager what he thinks of the damage and explain that it started after the service and you JUST figured out that it might be brake fluid. The worst they can do is tell you to kick sand. Under some miracle, they might say "yeah, ol' Jeff was an idiot and did that to 5 vehicles before we fired him..."
Another alternative? Find a sticker or vinyl wrap that looks good in that spot, clean it well and slap it on there! Cheesy, but effective!
