Paint Jobs

I did the poly/clear DIY route. Straightening all the trail rash and paint was a ton of work but kinda fun too. When the 4R comes up next spring, I'll do it as well, armed with knowing a few things not to do.

If you're kind enough to share, I'm interested in those few things not to do.

I wanted to maintain mine as a "Go-er, not a show-er" so it can be a truck. new paint tends to make men treat their rigs, like a girl treats "new nails." Not for me. So when I rebuilt my rig, I just rattle canned the sum*****. But I went totally nuts on it....painted the engine bay, all components, even the engine block, and all of my suspension.
So, there is that option.....

Im toyong with the idea of doing a gloss white rattle can job on the 4runner and top, half of my truck is duplicolored on the original silver anyway. I hear thst white is pretty forgiviging with spray paint, and its the color I want anyway..

White works well in a rattle can,

I got mine repainted about two weeks ago maybe. They also fixed some major dents (the roof was dented in about 5 inches, thanks to a tree).

While the paint job does look good, they did a terrible job with over spray (you can kind of see some white on my rear right tire in the photo smh) and the service was garbageeee. It costed around the 1 grand range and I got it done at Maaco Paint & Body.

By "the service was garbageee..." Do you mean they constantly phoned you with upsells? I've heard some locations do that a lot. They will usually fix the overspray if you point it out to them. I think they wipe it off with brake cleaner.

Did you take it to them with the Soft Topper on? I'd be afraid it would get stolen or seriously oversprayed. Did you get the hardtop painted too?

Looks good! Now its time to wet sand, cut and buff, put the bumper on and get some custom-colored graphics installed! The xtra-cab graphics like mine (blue truck in this thread) but in Pearl Orange-Red and fading into black would look pretty cool on white! Or do it in the blue like mine on met silver vinyl! Mine changes color (sorta like the shade-shifter or Chameleon paints) from bright met. teal to almost a deep navy blue!

They didn't call me about upping the price at all, they just said it straight to my face instead (the guy said "I'll give you a great deal, $700 for white." I told him that's really steep, then he said "Ok, $300." ???) They pulled that one for all sorts of things, like an extra $50 to paint the gas cap area.

My truck doesn't have a moon roof, I have an awesome aftermarket steel sheet instead (woo). They were supposed to install a new one, but they somehow ended up just giving their glass guy my windshield instead. My truck was finished being painted on a Monday (they originally "promised" me the Thursday before), however, I wasn't able to get it back because they gave the glass guy my windshield for some reason. Then of course I had to wait another week for my windshield so I couldn't drive it. I'm a student and school was starting up around that time, so it was just very frustrating, especially after being promised to have it done by a certain date, then it gets delayed almost 2 weeks, and they didn't seem to care.

I decided to just take my truck home and fix the rims my self. It's not a huge deal, it just sucks since I had just painted them the day before.

As far as the soft top, no, I actually didn't even own the soft top yet. I just gave Maaco the truck without the top on. I painted my hard top my self with plastidip just to see what it would look like, but I don't plan to ever put that thing back on.
