Paint Questions

Wow, I probably would have lost my mind. How the heck is she not liable to pay for every cent of damage? Some parents these days have just given up and are just as useless as their kids. Also at the VERY least you should claim it and get her to pay for the deductable. Thats literally the LEAST she could do. I dont see why your insurance should go up...it is in no way your fault, if someone else vandalized your vehicle what are you supposed to do about that? Then again insurance companies are crooks so who knows.

Have the lady pay your deductible, file through insurance, collect what you can and keep your 4runner. Are there any trade schools in your area that have auto body classes? I learned at community college where we practiced on customer vehicles, no labor charged just materials. If you go that route it may not be perfect but they should use quality materials and be so much cheaper than a body shop and better job than Macao. That would fix the damage and probably leave you with some spending money.

As far as repairing the damage . . . a good painter could repair that. It would probably cost quite a lot, but could be done. Basically they would sand out the scratches, spray a mid clear coat to fill in anything they missed, then paint the base coat, and then a final clear coat. Then sand and buff the overspray out. But the color would probably have to be custom matched as your paint has faded over the years. And then you would want to buff the entire vehicle. Otherwise you'll have a few really nice shiny areas with every where else being faded/scratched/etc

OP hasn't responded in a few days. I would love to hear how this has progressed. I hope he doesn't let that fly, that would be a b!tch move.

That vandalism is ridiculous--I would have flipped my s@#t.

As far as painting the vehicle goes, if you end up going that route, the previous owner of the 97 that I own had the truck painted by Maaco. He did all of the prep work himself, which saved him quite a bit of money--I think that he ended up paying around $600 for the paint job. I have the receipt somewhere still.

He said that he did have to bring it back to Maaco a couple of times because the first couple of shoots weren't very good, but they finally got it to an acceptable level.

The paint still isn't perfect, but you would have to look really close to know....meaning most people would never notice any imperfections. For $600 though, on a 17 yr old vehicle, I think it's a pretty awesome deal. I don't know how long it will look good for, but I'm impressed with it, and it's nice enough to make me think twice about taking it anywhere that it may get scratched. The paint is a slightly different color than the door jambs/engine bay, but you can't really tell the difference unless you're looking for it.

Plastidipping your truck would run around $400 if you were to do it yourself.

I finally got on my laptop to post a pic of some of the scratches (tapatalk is sucking). At least he dotted his i.
Am I a bad person if I get the $500 for the deductible from her, then cover it w/ a paint pen and use the $$ to get sliders??? :boink:

Gosh i thought you meant like little kids, like ages 3-8 who didnt know any better, and painted or scratched your 4runner just cause they didnt know any better.

But are those cuss words scratched on your 4runner? They must be like 10 years old or in their teens or somthing. Thats strait up vandalism. Even if they are young kids, im sure they knew what they were doing, and even if the mother doesnt work, id make her pay for the repairs.

Its her job to watch over what her kids are doing and she is repsonsible for what they do. So its her responsibility to pay for that.

Thats just messed up...
