Painted Wheels?

I have been searching for ways to make my 4runner stand out, but i don't know what. I was thinking of painting my stock 5 point rims with gunmetal gray. What do you guys think?

*The 4runner has the silver fender flares.

Awesome truck, not planning to do that many mods, but great regardless. The truck looks great with the gray wheels but I need to be sure thats what i want, there is no turning back.
 
gunmetal gray isn't going to make it stand out .. try orange, green, or red and watch as you get compliments from girls of all ages and light up children's faces as you drive by.

I know this from experience :)
 
Thanks mikebontoft and TexasTRDTeej for the idea, that would be something! And although I paid for the car, my dad would not let me paint them pink, green, blue, or any bright color like that, he isnt even convinced of painting them at all ! And thank you eightyhd for taking time to photoshop my wheels, it looks great! Thought about photoshop but i didnt have it, so thank you! I am more convinced of the gray, but that raises another question, spray paint or powder coat?

Well Automan4r you can't beat the lifetime of a powder coat job, but then again you're talking $200-$400 depending who you go to vs say $50 worth of high temp wheel paint and some clear coat from O'Reillys or something, but the paint idea looks good so don't be discouraged by the short life span of painted wheels. My old z28's rims were painted black with a couple coats of clearcoat on them, but started chipping after around 4 or 5 months.
 
Thanks for the input, and you're right, I could paint my rims at least 5 times over and still spend less money than powder coating. I think I might be going with the gray, all I need to do now is convince my dad! Thanks again!
 
what, he won't go for wheels like mine? my dad didn't either. lol.

honestly though... graphite should be nice color. I think duplicolor makes it in that color for wheel paint. maybe not.

If you want to go little more out there, try light bronze/dark gold color.
 
I say Graphite, or bronze would look good.... I'd go with a dark bronze though. Just keep in mind that painted wheels are not durable. I painted my stock 3 spokes, and they look good... but started chipping almost immediately.

I recently bought a set of Nissan Frontier wheels that I planned on using on my 05 Tacoma..... but after reading so many testimonies of people saying that it's not durable.... I'm re-thinking it. I may just paint them, and then sell them.

I honestly like the 5 spoke wheels just the way they are......

That being said... if you want your 4Runner to really stand out... a lift and tires go a long way. I always get compliments about my 4Runner.... not many lifted 3rd Gens in my area.... Throw some 33" tires on your 5 spokes, and add a 3" lift, and you'll be cruising in style.

IF you shop around, you could get your lift and a good set of used tires for around $1500.00 or less. :)

Just to even out the claims on paint chipping with DIY jobs, I painted my wheels and they have not chipped at all and that's over the course of a year. Same goes for friends wheels that I have painted even years later. Use quality spray paint like duplicolor.


Sand. Clean. Primer (if you want). Paint. Clear coat. More clear coat.


And yes I understand that they may have chipped off road, but so will most wheels. It's easy to touch up DIY wheels, powder coated ones not so much.
 
I powder-coated mine back; link in signature.

I think yours looks fine, just loose the running boards -now.

With silver trim those 5-stars look nice stock. Gunmetal isn't a great improvement on that truck IMO.

Start reading some builds and don't rush the mods :).

Lastly, if you are going to paint your wheels red, green , pink whatever then you ought to lower it and get a giant spoiler as well. You will get the same respect.

True.. paint doesn't last as long. Where I was mounting different tires all the time, they started to flake a little around the edge in some spots.


I would normally agree with this if I had been serious about my wheels, but it's always been a joke because it made my car look like it was probably slow. It sure as hell wasn't though :).

Now the fun is gone because everyone and their mother is copying Ken Block.... which makes people think I am too.
