Painting grey bumpers/Flares/Rockers

I'm looking and 4th gen 4runner that I wanted to color match the bumpers, flares, and rocker panels.

Anyone gone this route, what did you do?
Professional shop, spray them yourself?

I assume you are talking about the plastic cladding on the 2003 SR5s and Sport Editions?

The pieces are different than the painted pieces on newer ones. They have a very significant and deep texture molded into them that would not allow paint to have a glossy finish. It'd look like hell, don't do it.

If you go to a paint shop they will probably look at it and tell you the same thing.

Texture is smooth and paintable!

I took it to a bodyshop, at first glance he said no but then a closer and feel of the fender flares and etc....said that it wouldn't be a problem to paint.

I just think it depends on the quality of the bodyshop, you get what you pay for!

So are those painted in the picture in your sig? You 2 toned your 4runner? Did you take the lower cladding off the doors?
How much did you pay?

I want to color match the bumpers, flares etc to match the black body color.

I want to color match the bumpers, flares etc to match the black body color.

Decided against it, rather spend the money on a lift and tires.

He quoted me $2200cdn cash, so the price wasn't bad at all.

The cladding/flares are not painted in my sig, I used Black Wow Trim Restorer on my cladding/flares, gave it such a rich/deep colour to it. Before you decide to paint it, I'd suggest using the Black Wow Trim Restorer on your rig before spending the money on paint.

Once you scuff the plastic and prime the piece it won't be any different than any other piece of plastic. Sounds like a good excuse to buy a spray gun and perfect your wetsanding and polishing technique!

I haven't seen one with this type of bumper/cladding being painted, makes me think that some may also have consulted bodyshops regarding the painting but not convinced...(I have consulted 3 shops).

I use Mothers bacK to black...any plastic color restorer should maintain its gloss, and IMO its looks unique in a 4th gen and looks rugged. So, I suggest..don't paint it.

...and its not really a color mismatch if you have the galactic grey beacuse it will just blend. LOL!

At first I didn't care for the 2003's, but with the fenders/trim cleaned up in those photos, they look REALLY GOOD, and truly have that simple rugged-sports look, even in stock trim. I would guess the silver, grey and black 2003's look best in this configuration, IMO. Therefore, if it was me, I would not paint the fenders either.

I am about to go look at a 2003 silver 4R with the grey trim. I plan to get aftermarket "overland/off road" bumpers in black.

Can I get body color paint matched fender flares? Ultimately I would like to do this as I think black bumpers, grey trim and silver paint may be a bit much.

I'm sure you could buy the pieces from a junkyard or dealership but might be cheaper just to paint em.

There was a guy on here years ago who had a silver '03 with painted cladding. Can't remember his username, just that he was an Auburn fan. Maybe it was something like Jed.
