Paralyzed by indecision on tires

All great posts. I run factory size, P rated General Grabbers. The price is great, very low noise, Treadwell is good. I've had these on 4Runners for 20 years (gen3, generally V8, and now my gen5 - 2018 SR5). Great wet tire. Incredible snow tire (upper peninsula Michigan) . I have 12,000 miles on my current set, 99% on road (live music is back!) Very little wear, no measurements but I watch my tires closely.
I like these because I feel like the price to performance ratio is great. I don't want to lug around the extra weight of LT rated tires to drive like an adult. Though for off road, there are very clear advantages for running the heavy tire.

Depending on how back ordered those wheels are, you may want to look into the FN f(x) pro wheels. 0 offset and 8" wide future proofing you in the event you want to upsized. Plus 0 offset just looks better.

When I inquired, they said a few weeks or longer. Hoping it’s closer to a few weeks to a month or so(?). I’m not in a huge rush. When I checked out FN’s website, the update said that the wheels are on back order until at least December or January. And that was posted in July. We’ll see.

Larger wheels/tires never occurred to me though. That is something I’ll have to weigh.

If you ask for tire suggestions, you’ll get 100 different recommendations. Also I find it funny when I see posts from people living in Phoenix or Southern California give tire advice to people living in northern New England…or vice versa. I see you live in NC and I’m in Maine so I’m not going to give my 2 cents on a tire recommendation since our driving environments are completely different (at least from Nov-April anyway).

But I will give a warning about KO2s. I had them for about 22k in total. From new to 20k, they were fine on wet pavement. But over night at 20k they lost most traction on wet wet pavement, I’m talking under 40 mph traction. Scary stuff. Not sure if I had KO2 lemons or not but the wet traction loss at low mile usage is well documented on here if you search. After the KO2s I put on Cooper ATW (no longer made), 40k and they’ve been great. But my eye has been wandering for a more aggressive looking tire.

FWIW, I went with KO2s because I had KOs on a ‘95 Pathfinder and that combo was a tank in any condition.

I read through this thread again and holy crap did it give me a headache.
TireRack.com has many tires for 4R’s. You can slice and dice the data many ways.
Michelin Continental Yok’s Hell I had a some Sumitomo’s on another vehicle that were great and did not cost a lot of money. If anyone read about that company and tried their tires lot more people would consider them here.

I have a friend that had a nearly identical experience with his K02s. Zero wet reaction after ~20k miles. He would slide down relatively mild paved inclines.

Just had my yoko geo's G015 put on a few weeks ago. Great reviews and good so far but no real wet or snow personal experience yet. They seem to be a good compromise of on road handling and quiet with off road capability and looks. Not the best looking compared to a true AT but a good compromise and looks better than any AS.
 
I've been driving Toyota 4x4's since the late 80's. I've had more sets of BFG A/T's than anything. And I always have had good luck with them. In more recent years (and on my 4Runner) I absolutely loved the General Grabbers. I had AT2's on a Tacoma and the ATX's on this 4Runner. Awesome tires. Snow traction was great, not too loud, and decent road manners. Then like most of my trucks I lifted my 4Runner and went with 285's. First tires were Falken AT3W's and only one of them was truly round. Horrible experience but 8 months later I finally got refunded for them. They were replaced with KO2's but the balance was awful, tire shop blamed it on the tires... So they were only on it for 3 days. It was definitely a little squirmier than the AT3W's... current set after the BFG is Toyo AT3's. They were wonderful for about 10k miles. Now I can't wait to get them off the truck. Now at 23k miles they are cupped and chopped horribly (I rotate them every 5k and my alignment is spot-on, I'm actually a mechanic) and they are probably 2/3 worn. Beside the lack of shaking they actually remind me of the cheap mud tires I used to run when I was young. Love the look, they balance great, stick great on pavement... But not great in the snow and treadwear has been horrible. Not sure what I will run next but I'll probably need to figure that out before long myself.
 
+1 for the Yoko G015s. Not the most aggressive looking, but much improved so far over the Dunlops. DT matched an online price of 148 per tire - hard to beat!
 
reading these forums are frustrating some days. Opinions on tires will vary for sure and could be some lemon tires too. I have a few more days to set up installation for BFG ALL-TERRAIN TA KO2 LT265/70R17 C rated tires at costco. Reviews are solid but there are one offs that have had issues with the tires. Read wet pavement after so many miles can be bad but others no issues, plus balancing issues too.
 
Count me in also with the terrible wet weather traction issues with the KO2's. I've run 2 sets on 2 different vehicles in the last 5 years and have had balancing issues and the wet traction issues with both sets. Had some scary issues with complete loss of traction and hydroplaning, even at speeds as low as 35 mph. Not sure what's up with them, but I have lost trust in them on my daily drivers, especially vehicles my wife or kids might be driving.
 
The new nittos seem like they would be worth looking into for you. Recon or something. Heard good things Or maybe Baja T/A KR3

This is my biggest fear with the KO2's. I keep coming back to the Toyo or Wildpeaks because of this.

UPDATE:

I went with the Trail Terrain. Honestly, I'm not even sure why, other than maybe Costco could source them more quickly than any of the other options. And we had a slow leak, so this needed to be done.

They're ridiculously cheap at Costco. I think it was somewhere around $700 out the door. They refunded the installation because they cocked it up so that saved me about $80.

How do you like them so far?

I'm getting the same tires put on tomorrow. Only thing that scares me about them is the closed shoulders but I read somewhere that most water is evacuated thorough the vertical grooves. Not sure about snow since I live in the snow belt. Guess we'll see. I got them cause of the full sipes and light weight.

Post some pics when you get them installed, and let us know how they balanced out and ride. I'm going to be needing tires soon and saw those.
