Parking in single car garage

New member
Just moved from Sunny Southern California to the midwest where they have this weather stuff. My wife gets to park her car in the two car garage side, I have tried to get mine in there as well, but no go. So thinking of moving all my workshop stuff to the other side of the two car and see if I can get in the third single bay. It looks to be a tight squeeze though.

So after all of that, who here parks their T4R in a single bay?

I think you are onto something there. I have a four-car with 4 feet between the two. I moved my bench into that middle area and took a little of each side of the garages, it left a ton of room for my Excursion and the 4runner looks lonely on its side. I have cabinets on both outside walls of the garage that impacts the area to park cars. So I think if you moved everything to the space between the two sides you'd have plenty of room and it would be better access to everything in the garage. The big key, like mentioned above is getting 8' or taller doors, but for the most part that has to be done when the place is built. I'd try your idea.

I live in KC as well and the 4Runner sits on the 3rd car side of our garage just fine.

Perhaps adding the dimensions of the garage door opening might help us figure the issue?

Is you T4R lifted? Added roof rack?
 
We have a 3-car garage - a double and a single door - and I couldn't tell you if a 4Runner or an Avalon fit in there because we park in the driveway.

The boat, 2 riding mowers and a '64 Olds Jetstar 88 convertible fit nicely.

I'd say you need more stuff. :fishing:

Lot of people moving from SoCal, but not many to the midwest. What happened?
 
One thing you might try doing is to back one of the vehicles into the double car garage side, that way both driver doors open to the center aisle and have more room.

I do that and park the two cars close as I can to the stuff along the outer walls.

I park a utility trailer, pontiac vibe, and 4 runner into a 2 car garage.

There is about 3-4 inches on the passenger side of the 4 runner (I fold the passenger side mirror in prior to driving into the garage) to the push lawn mower and snow blower, about 3-4 inches along the passenger side of the vibe (which I back in) and the aluminum trailer is hoisted from the front up to the ceiling, so only the back of the trailer touches the ground and I back the vibe in under the trailer. I once parked my FJ Cruiser in forward under the trailer, while a relative's Highlander was parked on the side without the trailer. It made for a tight fit.

In the winter time, the snow blower comes out to the center aisle, so I can get it out of the garage after a storm.
 
We have a 2 car and a single third car garage I back my rig into the single because of the way it is built I can open the drivers door completely. Power folding mirrors would sure make it easier though!

No lift at this time, but will probably at the most do a 2/1. The width is 90 and it looks like I have about 3" on each side with the 4R width. I know I am currently ok on height since I have pulled into the other side.

Funny we have an Avalon in the driveway along with the 4R, the Highlander has the garage. My in laws have the toys a couple hours away...more fun to use others stuff right! Though a ride on mower is on my wish list.

Sick of traffic, cost of living and the schools near me were horrible, my wife's family is all out here and mine is spread all over the place.

I parked my 4R in there and could barely squeeze out and I know my 2 year old would probably swing open the door into my car.

Power folding mirrors would definitely be a huge plus, I guess I should reach out to Antman (?) to get another set going...

Thanks everyone for the replies! Looks like I will be moving my work bench, tools and home brew stuff in the spring...and possibly look into the power folding mirror mod.

That is my concern, will I want to do this every day with maybe a 3" margin of error on each side...well maybe just during the winter I guess. I usually leave by 0630 so brushing all the snow off while trying not to slide down the driveway is not fun.

We just bought a place in Stevensville, MT as a future retirement home. Same deal, sick of traffic, taxes, homeless and the politics. My wife is retired and I have 7 more years to go til I get full medical for life, then I retire. We're empty nesters and kids and grandkids are 2 blocks away, but we will keep all of our CA homes and we can visit. Eventually we'll sell primary home in CA.
 
Parking in a single garage usually works out fine as long as you don't get too tall or can remove some tall stuff on the rack when you don't need it. I only had about 6" clearance max and I've already added 3 with lift and tires. Really can limit your roof rack options at that point.

There was a thread that I think [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] did recently where he got Hilux folding mirrors to work on 5th gens. I would have never thought that would be an appealing mod but when you come well within an inch of hitting your mirrors every time you go in or out them folding mirrors start to sound nice. So just know you at least have that option.

I still need to get out to MT. I am sure that is a place where I would love to live. Doubt the missus would be up for it though. Congrats on the countdown! I would love to get a condo or something down in SD to keep for vacationing, but will have to wait till retirement...30 years or so from now.
 
I lived in a townhouse when I first bought my 4Runner and it was a single car. Took up a lot of room but got it in no problem. Now live in a detached home with an attached 2-car and both cars are now garage parked.
