Part ID please?

Hey all!

I was swapping my CV out and I noticed this seal started falling apart on me and the little retention spring that goes around it popped off. Does anyone know what the name of this thing is and perhaps a part number so I can go get a replacement? Also, is it a pain in the ass to replace? I'm hoping I can just pop the new one in without having to take the hub off and what not, but knowing my luck...

PS heat really does work wonders on the LBJ bolts. Combined with a compressor and impact from a friend, it was a breeze this time around.

Any other way to get these on a Sunday? Any tips on how to replace it while it’s still on my truck?

Also, not sure how to go about replacing while knuckle is on truck. I had my whole front end torn down, so it was pretty simple to replace.

It is possible to replace that inner seal without removing the knuckle assy., but you will have to remove the outer end of the half shaft from the hub first. It is much easier to remove this seal if the hub is removed, but if your hub bearings are good, then it doesn't make any sense to remove the hub. Once you remove the lower ball joint assy., from the knuckle, I would also remove the tie rod end from the knuckle, to get easier access to the back side of the knuckle. You will have to pry the old seal out, and then carefully put the new seal in place. It can be done, but it is also really easy to bend the metal lip on the new seal while trying to hammer it into place. I would suggest that once you are this far along, removing the upper ball joint connection to the knuckle, along with the mounting bracket for the brake hose and the ABS wire harness would let you remove the entire knuckle assy., along with the hub and bearings. This way you can put the entire assy., on a bench and removing the old seal and installing the new one becomes a LOT easier, IMHO.

If you look at post# 138 in the first link I posted you will see that the guy used the dust/grease cap to install the seal, it is a perfect fit on the seal to avoid damaging the seal during installing it.

Yep! Once I knew what that part was called I could use the search function. Otherwise it’s kinda useless when you type in “seal that touches cv thingy kajigger”.

Anyway happy to report that I did it! Used the axle nut dust cap thing. Thank god that’s over. Seems a little harder than it was to do on my 3rd gen.
