Part Numbers for Double Cardan Joint

Hey Dudes,

I've been doing some research to find out if it's possible to rebuild the double cardan joint on our rear drive shaft. The rebuilding looks doable but getting the necessary parts is a different story.

So far, this is what I've come up with doing quite a bit of reading on different forums and watching YouTube videos.

The part number for the Double Cardan U-joints is #UJ-236 (Made by Matsuba).

I haven't found a definitive part number for a replacement center ball for the joint. Does anyone know where we can buy a replacement center ball for this joint and the part number for it?

Thanks!

There are plenty of threads on this subject here. It's almost impossible to find these parts especially the ball.

Just get a beefy custom drive shaft from Tom Woods. It stronger & cheaper than stock. The common 1310 U-joints (guaranteed for life) will be easier to source & rebuild in the future.

Well, Toyota Replacement Driveshafts wants $565 for a double cardan driveshaft. I doubt it would be cost effective to ship them a driveshaft to rebuild but maybe they will have parts they are willing to sell so we can rebuild them ourselves.

Sure, a Tom Woods driveshaft would be cool but I'd like to find a solution of fixing the ones we already have with affordable parts. And, it would make an awesome DIY video.

Anyone else got a lead on the center ball needed for the double cardan joint?

Did mine ('97) about 15k miles ago - following the links and part numbers (below)...no issues since.

U-Joints = The Precision #513 u-joints ended up being Moog parts now. --> Moog 513

Center Ball = The Neapco 7-0409 cross referenced to Precision #614 (at O'reilly's) -->Precision #614

Those are all crap parts and fail. The center ball may no longer be available anyways. Some options.

1. Junkyard. This is what I did.
2. Custom built shaft . Expensive.
3. Oem. Very expensive
4. Rebuild with crap parts. Will fail prematurely.
5. High Angle Drivline-Call Jesse at 530-877-2875. These guys quoted me $150 for oem rebuild. They use the ball from another toyota for the double cardan. They would not disclose where they source the oem part.

Good to know those parts don't last. How much are we talking to ship a driveshaft to them and then ship it back to us? Obviously it depends on where you live but I could imagine the shipping isn't exactly cheap.

Cheaper than $500+ than shipping. Call him up, ask for Jesse. They are a good group of guys and know there toyota driveline. I have not talked to them for a year or longer so things could have changed. They usually answered my emails pretty quickly. He will inspect your driveshaft and replace only what needs replaced and then will give you a quote. $150 was on the high end if I remember right.

I have my shaft just waiting so when I hear some issues on my junkyard unit I can send them my old one for rebuild.

Thanks. I was researching this for a possible repair video in the future. I was hoping it was something a DIY mechanic could do themselves. Sending it out for someone else to fix sort of takes all the fun out of it.

In my 25 years of shadtree mechanical repair, I haven't ever seen anyone be able to DIY a double cardan joint that worked for very long. It really is a driveline shop repair.

U joints are a different story, the big C channel tool used for ball joints and the like works along with a big vice. Have never touched the ones on my 4runner.

If you can find a DC joint or a whole driveshaft at a pick and pull that's a sure bet. I had to have the one I scored cut and welded to the driveshaft because the centering ball stud was just as destroyed as the joint.

I found a full driveshaft and its how I fixed mine also. Only issue is 3rd gens in some states are very hard to find in a junk yard and its also sometimes hit or miss since these double cardons are known to fail at high mileage.

I know it. It was the only yard in the whole city that had 3rd gen 4Runners in the lot. The 96 was stripped bare and the 99 had just the joint. Someone cut the driveshaft above it and left an immaculate DC joint for my taking. I felt very fortunate!

Same here... I picked up a few over the years (anywhere from $20 to $40 a piece) to use as spares when the original one goes. The driveshafts are an item that are very hard to come by when you need it by tomorrow.
