parts list for future tranny swap

Just to add to this for future readers:

I swapped a Federal tranny into my Cali vehicle with no issues. I'm not even sure what the differences are, if any.
Should be dipstick tube shape only, with the different cat setup on the Cali vs. Fed vehicles.

Wait .... if you have a j-shifter/auto tranny. You won't be able to reuse your transfercase. The transfercase shifter is on the passenger for the manual. And the auto is on the driver side. I'm not sure about the electric transfercase though. Probably same

Your going to need drive shafts, interior trim, clutch pedal, brake pedal. The cross member, this however might be the same as auto and manual. When I did. I just reused the donor cross member.

Wait.... nvm. I though you were doing a SWAP. But you are just replacing old transmission. Sorry.

Sorry for the confusion, I'll edit my first post to make it clear I'll be replacing my failing auto with another auto.

Well I have some crazy good news. I dropped the pan after work tonight, first I opened the drain up and let most the fluid out.

There wasn't a single piece of metal shaving in the bottom of the pan, not even one glitter sized piece. Also, there wasn't one spec of black clutch plate particle. The fluid still literally looked brand new. The only thing I found was this brown clay like shit stuck on the bottom of the pan, there wasn't much at all.

Cleaned up the pan good and set it aside.

Next up, the filter. I removed the filter and this is what I found.

The screen was plugged with the same brown clay like shit. Two cans of carb cleaner later, filter was brand new looking again.

I bolted the filter back in place and put the pan back on with a felpro gasket.

Between the drain, pan drop and extra fluid that comes out of the filter, I measured exactly 6.5 quarts. I put back in 6.5 quarts and fired it up....

DEAD QUIET! Not a single hint of whine noise. So my initial thought was correct, the filter was in fact plugged up starving the tranny pump of fluid upon initial start up. Drove it around for 20 minutes (got the temp to 160) and checked the fluid, it was spot on.

Truck drove and shifted excellent just like before.

While I don't need to swap trannies (for now, fingers crossed), I still think the post was valuable for the content that was shared.

Cheers!

That's awesome news Mike. Hopefully your transmission will last for a long, long, time to come.

I think I'll drop my pan the next time I'm due for a drain and refill. I'm curious to see what I've accumulated in the pan and filter.

Could you share the part number for the Felpro gasket and where you got it from? Thanks!

Knowing what I know now, I would recommend that everyone at least drop their pan every 50k miles or so, to make sure the filter is clean.

Who knows how many trannies died because the pump failed due to a clogged filter. Glad I didn't ignore the noise and drive it until it blew up.

P.S. Most write up I've read said you need to drop the sway bar, on my 97 at least, that's rubbish. I had no problem removing or installing the pan with the sway bar still on. I did remove the upper dipstick tube (12mm bolt). It may be a littler tricky if you are using FIPG but the Felpro gasket I used worked great. I drove for probably 30 minutes total and its sealed perfect. My brother must have used a gasket too when he dropped the pan after his PMS, wish I knew that because I probably could have just reused it.

I'm not popping any champagne yet, but I'll sleep a lot better tonight, that's for sure!

On a side note, I keep saying "filter" when its really just a screen....BUT it is a very, very fine screen. I was under the impression that it was like a screen door kind of screen. It managed to get plugged up with super fine clay like (probably clutch pack) material.

My situation may be somewhat unique because of the pink milk shake that happened when it was my brothers about 12k miles ago but I would still recommend checking on that "filter" every once in a while.

Here you go Tim:

Fel-Pro TOS 18685 Automatic Transmission Gasket

I don't think its actually rubber, like the one I removed (came with the filter my brother bought).

It appears to be a paper/felt like material so it's probably not reusable like the rubber ones *may be.

Either way, it is nice to not have to scrape off FIPG/RTV every time you want to drop the pan.

You know, I was under the impression it wasn't that fine of a mesh either. Just like the screen filter at the bottom of the power steering pump, I imagine it could get clogged up. I'm pretty sure my trans pan has never been off and I have around 155,000 miles on my rig. I'll drop my pan soon and check to see what the screen filter looks like.

Thanks for the part number for the gasket. Don't know if I'll go the route of using the Felpro gasket but it does sound more attractive than scraping sealant off.

That gasket number just went in my wish list. I bought a 97 that needed a engine and trans. I have both from our wrecked 96. But the owner said the trans slipped after he replaced the filter and serviced it. When I got it home I found a puddle of ATF under the drain plug. It was 1/8" from being tight. I'm still going to drop the pan and make sure the filter is on right. I'm hoping to swap engine and trans is ok and just low on fluid or he screwed up installing filter.

There are two cork gaskets on top of the filter, perhaps he forgot to put them back on or they got dislodged when he re-installed the filter.

Doesn't hurt to check.

Just an update, I've driven the 4runner about 10 times since I cleaned the filter including pulling my boat to a local lake.

Zero whine
Zero delay in shifting when cold from park
Zero shifting issues although it never had any to begin with, even when it was whining

Check your filter periodically for blockage!

I did a swap almost 2 years on my 01, and it wasn't too bad. Here's some good information that I had used when doing mine.

You WILL need a transmission from a 96-98 4runner, and no other years. While the transmissions will all bolt up with no issues. The valving is going to be different between the three. The hardest part about that swap was getting the old plugs apart without breaking them.

If you're considering doing any exhaust work this is your chance. You have all the access you need to the bolts, and swapping exhaust would be a cake walk at that time.
