Parts, where to get them?

Hey guys and gals, 1st official post, but won’t be my last. Before I start, so far I’m liking what I have been reading here. I’m certainly getting a lot of idea.

Ok, now for the question. Where do you guys get your parts from? Summit, Jegs, off road shop, Rock Auto, Amazon, eBay, etc.

I have seen through a few post here, some talk about rock auto or some Toyota dealers. Some have talked about getting from the classifieds. Just trying to get an idea before starting on my project.

If it does matter, I have a 4th gen 4Runner. 08’ SR5 2WD. Bought it new in August of 08’ as an end of year model, which was for the wife. Fast forward to last week, wife got another new car, and I get the 4Runner.

You can also buy OEM and equivalent factory replacement parts from RockAuto. The OEM suppliers for a lot of Toyota parts are Denso, Aisin, and a few others, so if you see anything with those brands, its the same thing marked up and sold at the dealer.

I buy OEM parts that RockAuto doesn't have from McGeorge Toyota online. There are a few other dealers with big online presence, but McGeorge usually has competitive prices

For aftermarket off road parts, theres a variety of suppliers that will take a little more research to determine what is right for your application and price point
 
Ok cool. This definitely helps. Im in uncharted territory when it comes to the 4Runner.

I’m more familiar when it comes to the mustang, where you got rock auto for OEM replacement parts, but got places like American Muscle, LMR, NPD, and CJ pony parts for various OEM and aftermarket parts. With that vehicle, you also have the good ol’ fashion junkyard, for factory upgrades and restomods, which from what I’m reading here seems the 4th gen 4Runners can get some parts from other Toyota vehicles.

For me it typically depends what type of part I am buying for the vehicle. If it’s a long-term wear item that takes a long time to replace I typically go OEM so I don’t have to do it again in the near future. If it’s something cheaper and easy to install a lot of times I will take a risk and buy a less expensive part from the auto parts store or rockauto.com. Typically just a matter of how much I want to spend and whether I want to take a chance on having to do a job again soon. That’s not to say that OEM parts never fail, I just tend to have better luck with them.

Depends what it is, most electronics I want OEM or at least Denso. I'll buy used starters/alternators before I'll buy an aftermarket one as they last longer. I've bought from McGeorge Toyota with no issues. Sometimes I grab a part number from that site and google for one elsewhere as there may be a Denso variation which is likely the same. Wheelbearings I've bought the OEM Koyo bearing from RA and pressed it into the hub myself, seems most of the hub/bearing assemblies are made in China. Brakes and such are generally Rockauto but I will look on Amazon for a better price or quicker delivery.

wheeler's off road is my favorite, but a week out for me being on the other side of the country. Just search on here to find what set up you want and google is your friend at finding the best prices. Some OEM dealers are selling for over 30% off and no tax, so those are my favorites for OEM. Had 4 wheels shipped from NE ohio not long ago for $62 to my work! As far as body parts/bumpers, kids are keeping me away from searching for those for a few more years so sorry can't help you there.

Yotamafia, Apache off Road, Bilstein lifts, and many more are all well-known companies in the Toyota world. Pretty hard to go wrong with these larger companies As far as aftermarket accessories go. I would personally stay away from suspension connection. I had a terrible experience with them

I typically buy most of my parts locally through NAPA or O’reillys if it’s a basic item like brakes or maintenance. I get a discount through my employers commercial account so that helps. I’ve had good luck with Rock Auto. My “local” dealer is an hour and a half away.

Dobinsons, Toytec, Icon, Fox, Radflo or Old Man Emu are a few brands that all make some great stuff for our trucks.

I guess it depends on how you want to use your truck.

My truck is mainly being used as my daily driver and road trip vehicle. Might also be used for my side hustle, carrying my big tool box. The most off roading it will do is going to a drive on beach, and also a very rare possibility heading to hill country. However the possibility of severe weather and flooding in my area over the past several years, makes me want to lift for a piece of mind.

For a lift and without going overboard, since you're 2wd and probably don't want to spend $$$ for top tier suspensions I recommend you look into finding yourself a pair of 3rd gen tacoma take off front suspensions on like offer-up/craigslist/used marketplaces. You can find them for $50 a pair which is equivalent to buying new spacers on amazon. Those tacoma take off will give you around 2 - 2.5" of lift. Better than any spacer lift kit. For the rears, you can either go with just spacers or wheelers T12 rear coils which should give you roughly 1.5" of lift and then paired with some bilstein 5100 shocks.
 
Thanks guys for the response. From the looks of it seem like we still can get a lot of our parts from the auto parts store. It is definitely good to hear that we got some dealers with websites that we can get OEM parts from. Of course when all else fails we got Rock Auto.

Also thanks for the names of some other aftermarket/off road shops that are reputable and the ones to avoid.

Now off to project planning. Lots of things to do, and ideas to pass around.

partsouq.com has been good for me. They're based in Dubai, shipping takes a bit longer, but their prices are often low enough to make the wait worth it.

I use them for OEM parts.

I always give good ole ebay a check too before pulling any trigger. you'd be surprised how many used parts come off wrecked 4runners.
 
I’ll look at some of these other places.Most of my projects I have planned will take some time, but if it is a good deal I will not hesitate pulling the trigger on, unless it is a part I need to repair a major component that I need to drive one for work.I have been browsing eBay, good deals to come though, especially if they fit the idea I’m looking for, but have been burned on shipping . Dunno if it just the delivery service or usps, fedex, ups, etc but it always comes late. Very rarely have I had a complication with a part from eBay, unless is wasn’t fully cleaned of oil or fluids before shipping? I know ups and fedex hate that.
