If you have a SR5 the lesser volume is actually when you are not in Party Mode. I leave mine in Party Mode all the time because its much louder and has better bass and treble.

AFAIK the rear doors and rear hatch speakers are the same. 6.5 inch.

Same here - PM all the time because when it's off, the sound is terrible.

I agree - I actually tried to leave party mode 'off' for a week, thinking I might adjust to it and just have to turn on the volume more, but I finally gave and put it back on, so much better. I usually have my 2nd row folded flat so that makes it even better as there is really no blockage fo the sound.
I have gone onto Crutchfield and they have a couple Sony speaker replacements, I keep thinking I might swap out the rear hatch ones as I know how to access them. The following link shows insided the rear gate and the speakers.....

Has anyone taken the rear door inside panels off yet? I hate to take things apart on a new vehicle unless I have to, but if it is easy I might swap those as well.

i do have an sr5. to get the volume at a decent level in PM it means going up to like 8/10s volume, where in regular its decent at 5/10

Then you have it backwards... If you feel the PM button is pressed in slightly further your in PM.
But you can test it out. In your driveway when you think your in normal mode open your passenger door and stick your head next to the speak and see if its on. If not then your in party mode.

Try playing with your settings more... the true quality of the sound shouldn't be any better in PM mode unless there is something wrong.
With PM on you're just getting more volume from fewer speakers. You can get much fuller sound quality by leaving PM off (using all the speakers) and adjusting the fader, volume, bass and treble levels.
Without doing that you are just noticing a louder sound (not better) since the speakers facing you and behind you are blasting in your ears. With all the speakers working evenly, it fills the entire cabin very well and provides better acoustics.
Setting the Fader forward +1, Bass +1, and Treble +5 works really well in my SR5 w/out JBL... Nicer speakers would make it perfect!

holy crap i cant believe i had it backwards. more so i cant believe the radio w/o PM sucks balls that much!!
I used it for 3 days....about 6-8 hours per day....not even a glitch when I tried to start the car on the 3rd day.

Since there is really no on/off light/indicator for PM people get it confused sometimes.....
Turn your stereo on to a normal volume.....press the PM button.....if the stereo gets louder & clearer then you have entered into (on) PM......if the stereo gets quieter and less clear then you have left (off) PM.
There is a big difference to me when pushing the button in & out (off & on). As said before as well, if the speakers in the tailgate are active so is PM. I would love to be able to know how to bypass the system so the rear seat speakers are also active when PM is.

Mine is a lot clearer & cleaner - have you adjusted any of your settings? I noticed that even if you adjust your setting for AM/FM they do not follow to XM or USB. I guess that is kind of nice because you can have different setting for different 'media'.
Do you have the JBL system on yours? If so that could be a huge difference. If not, I ask the same as above, have you adjusted any or your settings?
I might try to 'record' the differences I hear in the next few days, not sure how they will transfer over to the computer though. Either case I think the stock speakers could use an upgrade, they are not horrible by any means, but they could be improved.

yeah, had a suburban rental this week, the stock bose system was much deeper and cleaner than our stock speakers

Limiteds do not have much difference if any at all. Many have reported this.

That is why....us SR5'ers can not get the JBL system, and for us the PM makes a huge difference. The better speakers & more speakers in the system you have make a huge difference, resulting in not such a noticeable change between it on and off. Try a non-JBL system and you will see what we are talking about!
