Wanted to introduce myself and my ride. I'm going to use this first post to track my build and progress as I go.

Had her shipped straight from Japan.

1996/11 Toyota Hilux Surf KZN185

1KZ-TE, auto. Put over 4000kms on her the first week she arrived, driving from Vancouver, BC to Winnipeg, MB then on a road trip to Minneapolis and back. Averaged under 9L/100km and drives beautifully. Really feels like a new truck.

Anyway, these are all the pics I have so far. Will post more as I go.

Installed Lift kit and tires

Lift is a Toytec 3"
Front: Toytec Coilovers (Bilstein shocks)
Rear: OME 890 springs with OME Shocks

Tires are Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 265/75R16 on Toyota twin 3-spoke wheels.
Also ordered a set of Spidertrax 1.25" spacers. Waiting for those to arrive; hopefully they get here soon.

I had wanted to swap my winter tires to the Toyota rims and mount the Duratracs to my 8" wide wheels but I didn't have the time to do that this year. I will probably repaint my other rims over the summer and swap the tires around winter time.

This is right hand driving surf and with that fender mirror you can see the front left fender flare area so you can park very close to the adjacent vehicle. Also help to avoid trees and rocks when going off road. I have one installed in my 4runner here in the US and it is on the front passenger fender so I can see the front right fender flare area. My wife used it to do her parallel parking!!! and she passed the driving test on the very first attempt.

Seems your surf don't have a spare wheel carrier. This is the first surf I saw without it.

Looks great! I just picked up a 96 Hilux Surf too, except mine is green / grey. (with tire carrier)

Too bad I didn't see ya on the roads here in Vancouver!
 
Hey guys. Thanks for all the comments. I've been lurking on this forum ever since I thought about importing a Surf. Now that its here I love the thing but there are already some mods that I want to do :bravo:

First things that I have to do are install daytime running lights (DRL from this point forward, as its too much to write) and north american DOT approved headlights. Both of those should be done this week so I can get a plate and be nice and legal.

After that I will need to replace my radio with again, something north american. In Japan, they use a different frequency range and so far I can only listen to cassettes (btw anyone know what those are? :P ) or my really crappy iPod FM adapter on a crappy frequency with lots of noise. Here's the replacement. High tech shit right there!

The truck is a 3.0L turbo diesel. Cold weather package (aka dual batteries!). As many have noticed, it doesn't have the tire carrier on the back. This is both good and bad, I suppose. It means that right now, I don't have a tire carrier. The good is that when I upgrade to larger wheels and tires, I won't have to get rid of a tire carrier that's too small to carry a spare.

Not sure if anyone has swapped it into a 3rd gen, but it was available in the last year or 2 of the 2nd gen and guys have done some swaps into those. My truck has an A340F which is the same as the early 3rd gens I believe.
 
it has been done. there was a thread in YT about it. some guy in Texas did the importing and swapping

Yes, that is the same transmission.
