PCV Valve FYI....

So i had ordered a small pile of parts for the 4runner from rock auto, the only "mechanical" part being a PCV valve, since i read on here that this ~4$ part can improve fuel economy. Install simple, one pipe "clamp" and a needle nose pliers to remove, and i did notice a small increase in MPG, at first.

Fast forward 3 weeks, and upon start-up i see a puff of blue smoke! What the hell!?!?.... well i checked all the fluids, they'll looked good and full, and the rest of the day no more smoke... internal thought bubble 'Maybe this kinda thing will happen occasionally, 257k miles....'

Next day, another bigger ploom of smoke, and smoke upon acceleration! now i'm very unhappy, but it doesn't seam like an oil O-Ring because it should have started more gradually.... Last part replaced was the PCV. Thought bubble again 'Really? well that'll be a f**kin first". and upon removing the throttle body oil dribbled out! (the pipe leading from the Valve Cover to the intake was full of oil)!

Lesson: Don't install cheap sh*t parts in your nice 4runner! also the PCV from the dealer is $10.17

Yeah it's one of those things I like to keep original, and change it every 30k even if you're OCD about oil changes. I just did the PCV in my 4th gen yesterday when I did the diffs and PITA WS atf d&F, it was a tiny bit crusty and probably the original one after ~65k miles (more of PITA to change than my 3rd gen's) so we'll see if I get any MPG improvement... One can always hope. I didn't really notice any improvement when I did it 15k miles ago on my 3rd gen, but it still needed doing, and it still doesn't burn a drop after nearly 200k.

No harm, no foul with your case I suspect though

I did mine with the OEM valve and grommet. Grand total of like $13. The old grommet was so dry-rotted that when i tried to pull it out, it came out in chunks the size of a pencil eraser. got the vehicle at over 200,000 miles, pretty sure this was the first time it had been changed) The bottom half broke off and fell into my valve cover. Luckily, there was a little metal shelf beneath it and i fished it back out with a welding rod. From simple to nightmare job in literally 5 minutes.
