I don't think I am stupid, but is there some trick to installing a new PCV valve? I've got a replacement made by purolator (and its plastic) and I can't seem to push it thru the rubber grommet ... the rubber grommet doesn't seem to give all that much to allow the raised ridge of the valve to pass thru .:ybrick:

pull out the rubber grommet then get a better look at it,

warm your engine up some and then try again.
 
The grommets get hard over time and you may need to replace it. Don't wait until it is brittle or you will be picking out of the valve cover.

Since my local auto parts store did NOT have a new grommet, I am reluctant to remove it. It doesn't appear brittle but I did lube it ...However, my trusty micrometer did tell me the new one was a bit FATTER so I cleaned the old one with some carb cleaner and it appears to be working well ..... so back in she goes .....

This is certainly not a part you want to reuse. I just had to replace mine as the previous owner was soo freaking lazy, He used duck tape to keep the valve attatched to the gromet when it got too old and started cracking. I had to use needle nose pliers to pull the broken pieces out of the valve opening. Moral of the story, Replace the grommet, it cost next to nothing and will save you a head ache if you don't.

I do them every 50k, and I am on my 3rd NAPA PCV. No issues. I did grommet at 150k as it was getting hard.

I sprayed mine till it was dripping with carb cleaner then used a rubber mallet to bump it in slowly and soft.
 
How to remove?

How do you pop these things out? I don't want to reef on it too terribly hard unless that's what I have to do. Does it have to be rotated to a certain orientation?

Simply pull on it, wiggle it back and forth if it's not coming out.

If it STILL doesn't come out, buy a new grommet (which you should anyway) since you might ruin this one, and pull harder.

It does not have to be in any certain rotational position to install it. Once in though, rotate it to where the hose can attach. =)

I never did try too hard to pull mine out, but I would suggest some WD-40 to soften the rubber grommet and pulllllll ... but you will need a new grommet when its time to put it back together ....
 
If the wd40 doesn't do it, use chlorinated brake cleaner on the grommet. It will chemically soft/ melt the old rubber enough to slide the PCV out. Then using a razor, cut a vertical slit in the grommet. Using needle nose pliers, grab one end and cork screw it out. If you do it any other way, it will break up and fall inside.
 
I know this thread is almost dead, but I just wanted to chime in and ask a few things. What EXACTLY does replacing the PCV Valve/grommet do?; How often should I change it?; What if it has never been replaced before?; What are the price ranges here?
 
On my 2000 T4R LTD, when I replaced the valve cover gaskets, I went to replace the PCV grommet. It was hard and brittle. As I tried to pull it out, it started crumbling. So, I took a knife and cut the grommet across the top and as deep down as the knife could reach. I was able to get most of it out but a few pieces did fall down inside. A set of really skinny medical forceps was able to get the pieces. I replaced the grommet with an original Toyota part (not that expensive) and also an ORIGINAL TOYOTA PCV VALVE! The difference between an original Toyota PCV and the junk the auto parts stores end up sell is night and day. The Toyota part has a metal housing. The auto parts store sell the "all plastic" crap. I humbly submit to save future headaches and use an original Toyota PCV valve. It is more reliable, better built, lasts longer and helps protect your investment.

I take the opposite approach. I don't care how long a PCV valve lasts because I change it every 30K with my sparkplugs. I don't care what it's made from--at the end of the day it's a ball in a tube. They don't die from material fatigue, they die because they get gummed up and the ball doesn't move. Make the tube out of carbon fiber and the ball out of gold and it will still get gummed up. I'm at 160K and 13+ years with this approach. I use NAPA #CRB 29352 ($4.29) for the valve and NAPA #NOE 6301059 for the grommet. I'm not saying you are wrong, I just prefer doing it this way and spending my money on other things. At a 30k change interval I really can't go wrong with the cheap version.

Everyone has their own approach and that's cool. My only thought is that with all the heat generated by the engine, plastic gets brittle and breaks (just like the PVC grommet). I have heard people snapping the plastic ones off due to heat fatigue and the brittleness issue. For me personally, I like the peace of mind of knowing my OE PCV valve is less likely to have this issue being made with a metal base rather than plastic. Thats my two cents worth.
