PCV Valve

I would have to agree with [MENTION=25434]BamaDrewski[/MENTION] on this one. Most of the time, you really can't go wrong with OEM products. Why not play it safe?
 
i'm in a bit of panic mode atm

i was changing the valve and the grommet...the grommet was very brittle...it kept breaking off in my needle-nose pliers

i don't think anything fell inside the unit...

...that is until i tried to get between the grommet and the rim with the needle-nose pliers to get a better grip to pull the whole thing out without breaking off any more bits and pieces when the rest of the frigging thing got pushed into that unit/housing/whatever it's called

i was able to get a 2nd needle-nose pliers and get the grommet out of the thing, whatever it's called, without too much trouble

i am not 100% sure some little bit and or piece didn't fall in where i can't get to it without dismantling everything to pop the top, so to speak

anyhow, cutting to the chase, what if a little bit and/or piece fell in there that i didn't get out?

i was resetting the EFI (?) so i waited until my 30min was up, put the sensor/fuse back in and fired it up...other than the fact that it did start, i don't have any idea about said bits and/or pieces and if i have a big problem on my hands

Same thing happened on mine. I used a vac with the long skinny crevice tool and got a few bits out I couldn't reach with the needle nose. Not sure if I got,them all out either but has been running okay now for about 700 miles since I replaced it.

i don't have a vac like that do that; so, yeah, what may have dropped in there is still there

i don't think anything did, but just can't say 100% for sure

just took it around the block and everything seems ok

guess time will tell

There should be a baffle between it and anything vital that will block the rubber pieces from getting down into the motor. This is according to a mechanic buddy of mine (I had the same issue, but was able to pull mine using needle-most pliers).

And here is what I call the "poopy death" because it catches my eye every time I type a post up, but I have no idea what practical use it would have in any conversation.

X2 on this... last time my valve covers were off I was trying to come at the PCV from the backside to no avail. There was no direct path to the backside. Broken pieces will have to work to make it to the cams. But, I still want all of the grommet out.
 
Time to replace? (Pictured)

As far as I know its original. I really hadn't heard of this until lately. I guess I will replace this week.

Does the oil around it mean anything in particular or just normal after awhile?

Looks like you need to power wash the engine first. The grommet will need to be replaced to stop the oil leakage. use needlenose pliers to pull it out. The easiest/safest way is to use an exacto razor to put a vertical cut in the grommet and then with the pliers, pull one end out and rest will follow. It may break apart when you pull out the PCV valve.
 
I wouldn't worry about the mud.

My rule of thumb is an OEM/OEM maker PCV every 100,000 miles. If it were a $60 part, I'd have second thoughts. But for $6 and change, why not. Given my little amount of blowby, I have the PCV running into a catch can, then it works its way to the intake manifold.

If you decide to remove the grommet, be careful. Or pull the valve cover and remove it like such.

I take it the T connector is for the CAI?

Did you snap this pic with the new camera?

You said What? I would rather drop a chunk of rubber grommet in the valve cover than any of that sandy muddy crud. The rubber will sit harmlessly in the baffle, whereas the "mud" with disolve and flow all over the engine. Bad advice. If someone started a post with that statement, I would completely disregard everything he Ever said past present and future!

But thats just me.

Thanks guys . so basically wipe the oiled mud before doing anything to the valve. That's easy.

Not the new camera. Just my LG G2.

I assume the T-connection is for the K&N as well. I installed it over 7 years ago and haven't messed with it except to swap and clean the filter.

If rubber pieces fall into the engine, do not worry, there is a trap to catch the rubber pieces about an inch below. Use a needle nose pliers to pull those out.
 
I pulled with lots of force but my PCV won't come out. It'll spin freely in place, but not pop on out. Lol, this stupid little guy is a pain in my ass.

Do it while the engine is hot. The rubber will be softer.

You may need to leverage it out. Spray the pcv/grommet with wd40 or similar lube. Use some plier to grab the pcv, place a small block of wood close to the valve and lever the valve upwards. It should come out. The block of wood will protect the valve cover.

I had the same issue as you. I warmed the engine for a few and then tried a similar approach, popped right out. The grommet however is a different story. Mine was so old and brittle that it tore and pieces fell into the reservoir. Needle nose pliers did the trick.

Yep do this, because just pulling up on the lip of an old non OEM grommet will just tear pieces off and eventually send the rest down into the hole. I used an EXACTO knife (not boxcutter) to get a good angle and cut as much as I could, try to cut it in half, then when it goes in there you can pull it right out with some long needle nose. I just did this. Then gorilla taped some large vacuum hose to a smaller wand on my shop vac and got out whatever fell in.
 
This thread helped me a lot... as this was trickier than expected. As suggested, I ordered both the valve and gromett. Once the PVC valve was out it was time to get the (hardened) old gromett out. I think it was the original - 215K miles. I could spin it with needle nose vice grips but when I tried to easily pull it out, the top half came off and the bottom dropped and rolled back. Shoot. I could still see it. Fortunately a long straight wire (cut cloths hanger) got it re-centered under the hole. I used hemostats and pulled it up high enough to get the needle nose vice grips on it, angled it and it came out all in one piece. Whew!! Done.
 
I wanted to bump this thread because I have a question about PCV valves and symptoms they cause when they fail.

Here's what I got:

Oil consumption
Oil leaks
poor mpg
rough start
slightly rougher idle
misfire under load mainly when trying to pass or accelerate up hills

Does this seem like a bad PCV valve?
