PCV Valve ?

What would cause oil to be sucked up through the PCV valve? Blow by?

Thats what it does. It cleans the vapors from under the valve covers and burns it thru the intake airstream.

An excess of oil present; my guess is that you have bad valve seals.

Blue smoke at first start up?

I have a bad set on the Cyl 5 exhaust valves and have made a catch can of sorts between the PCV and where it runs into the upper manifold due to being too lazy to get it fixed at the moment.

Oil vapor will condense and leave residue... as long as it doesn't puddle in the intake you're fine
