People that are selling 4th gens and getting 5th gens, please state your reasons

Sorry, I don't really qualify to answer this thread since I won't be selling my 4th Gen to purchase a 5th Gen ... so I can't tell you why I would do that. But I can tell you why I won't be doing it. As others have said, the power plant is anemic. And I don't like the stormtrooper styling. The 5th Gen just isn't the 4Runner for me. I'll be waiting for the 6th Gen before I consider buying another new 4Runner. YMMV.

AMEN.
And the interior seems junky compared to my 4th gen.

Ideally I'd love the later 3rd Gen Exterior with flared arches and the chome, with the 4th gen interior/trans/V8 engine and the electrical audio/video/etc of the 5th Gen. :D

Had thought of going 5th Gen until saw no V8.

Love the looks of the 5th gen. but after me and the wife drove one we just could not do it. It was terrible compared to my 03. The interior was nice but felt cheap comparatively. The engine is a turd and must have been a joke among the engineers. The 5th gens deserved the 4.6 and Toyota blew it because of the CAFE standards. Let's hope the 6th gen is better because our 4th gens aren't going to last forever, it is getting to be replacement time for a lot of us. :dammit:

I disagree with this. Look at the TRD Pro versions and Trail versions in the 5th Gen. A guy I surf with is very involved in Toyota's (TRD specifically) off road development programs and those guys love what they do and are coming up with some cool stuff for the next Gen.

I just hope hope the 6th Gen 4Runner doesn't look like the new "Discovery." Ughh.

I get what ur saying... but that really wasn't my point. Looking big picture here.

Its like Slowly Boiling Frogs... I trust you know the saying...

When Toyota has a decision to make regarding certain thing now, they put more weight into the eco/efficiency,mommy side than they do the enthusiast side.

I am not saying they don't have a capable off-road truck... they offer some trim levels to make people happy, but slowly, every year, they take something away that the older generation owners love. What was once standard is no longer, or is a premium feature.

They just weight their decisions in different ways now... Its about making compromises, not making an off-road truck with even more pedigree than the one before it. Its not just the 4Runner, I am also looking at their flagship truck, the Land Cruiser.

Its fine, the times are changing... but I am not going to sit here and lie to myself about it.

Toyota is good at riding their own coat-tails... just look at the Tacoma. And slapping on some basic 6112 shocks on a TRD Pro and asking 7k above MSRP isn't innovation.

On top of that didn't they also disband their trail teams?

I would still consider buying a 5th Gen, but only the Limited trim level and them building it up from there. I don't care what anyone says, the Torsen center is that much better... it used to be standard on the 4th Gen. It still is standard on the GX and 5th Gen Limited. They ditched it in the SR5, Pro and Trail.

I don't mean to disrespect you or your friend, but look at what? It took Toyota/TRD How long to figure out to throw on Bilisteins (for 1.5" of lift), LT All-Terrains, Wheels, and some factory black plasti-dip looking letters? It's not like that's been the go-to starter mod set for over a decade for 4Runners, Tundras, Tacomas, and FJ Cruisers. Of course they charge a significant premium for the package, at which point one could have gone with a solid 2.5" diameter coilover lift for 3" of suspension lift, tires, and had some left over for cosmetic stuff. I mean it's great it's all factory warrantied and all that; the shocks their using aren't 5100's they're pretty impressive components. But the TRD Pro is basically an SR5 that has had shocks/springs, tires/wheels, and some badging upgraded and that's it. The TRD Off-roads are basically the same thing except they run stock tires and the suspension isn't as beefy.

TRD hasn't actually made an impressive product for Toyota besides the Supercharger Program, everything else is literally "add-on" stuff that's been done a ton of times. Wheels, sway-bars, re-branded K&N filter boxes, badging, shift knobs, ect.

Where's the TRD tuned suspension overhaul kits that give some of the aftermarket coilover companies a run for their money? The rebuilt/tuned engines that start reminding one of AMG before they sold out, or actually tuning a TRD model to perform better than a stock vehicle? The vehicles that start actually having less than 99% parts compatibility because they actually did something to the vehicle to push the envelope and make it stronger, meaner, faster, ect.

I like TRD,I really do, they're a cool division and they make some amazing concept/show vehicles; but honestly? From a factory to consumer standpoint, they're just a glorified parts catalog for knick knacks you can get better and often at a better value elsewhere. Where's Toyota's competitor to the Ford Raptor? Because it sure as hell isn't a TRD Pro Tundra with stock LCA & UCAs, stock drivetrain, stock frame, stock interior, ect.; Ford bothered to at least try a mid-travel suspension system with custom tuned King shocks & springs on their off-road attempt and even went as far as designing convertible beadlock wheels as an optional accessory among other significant changes. Toyota and TRD have been stagnant for a LONG time and they haven't really figured out what to do with themselves on the consumer side for a long time either. I'm sure TRD is hamstrung by Toyota along the way as well, it would not surprise me one bit to hear that given how ridiculously compartmentalized and confused Toyota is sometimes as a company.

But let's be real; Toyota's newest "off-road" model is going to be the Rav4 Adventure to try and copy the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk's sales by throwing a paltry .4" lift on a Rav4, some badging, maybe a skidplate, and a towing package. The Tundra and Sequoia "TRD" trims are just a sales gimmick to try and squeeze more sales out of an aging and slowly dying generation of vehicle (Tundra sales have slumped while other trucks have only gone up). I don't expect much else beyond a slightly similar "TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, TRD Shiny" package on the 6th gen with the same relatively mild mods for a premium that we see now. I want to see TRD unleashed, to be allowed free reign to achieve the potential they show in their concept, race, and show cars; to make a Tundra into a Raptor competitor that would make Ford shit a brick, not a $7000 add-on package that achieves the same thing that a new forum member does with a third that amount doing the usual "LT Tires, Bilistein, and Plasti-Dip" combo.

Spot-on... and the Ford example is solid. I am really not a Ford fan but I love the Raptor.

What I like about Ford is they take risks in their different market segments... it's not just the trucks, the Focus RS, Mustang GT350, and a few of their other cars really are impressive machines... All making strides in their respected segments...

I know I am being really critical of Toyota here but I do want to see them crawl their way back to the top, but it seems like they are not really interested in doing that anymore. They dont even have anything fun to drive on the street anymore... Remember the day of the Supra, what happened to all that awesomeness? Those were their golden years.

Even in the compact truck segment which Toyota literally dominated this entire time, probably from being unchallenged, but GM has finally caught up if not exceeded what the Tacoma has to offer... Not in just technology but with a more modern, ergonomic, and comfortable cabin. Personally I would much rather own the new Colorado than a new Tacoma. I was a bit blown away after test driving their new mini diesel.

Right now this thing as my eye... I might replace my Silverado with this if and when the times comes.

2017 Colorado ZR2: Off-Road Truck | Chevrolet

The ZR2 Colorado is a Tacoma owners wet dream...
DSSV Shocks
Duramax Diesel
FRONT AND REAR Locking Diffs :trophy:
and a bunch of other junk...

Common Toyota... don't tell me you never check the forums? WTF is your market research team doing? If you build it, they will come.

But whatever... I am just another car enthusiast ranting and raving... I love my 4th Gen 4Runner, I am happy I have it, and blessed to be able to enjoy it in the places I get to take it on and off-road. It really is one of those cars that helped shape me into who I am today. And for that, I will forever be a fan in some way or another.

The critical part of my statement was the word "consider" ... I'm not sitting around waiting on the 6th Gen, was simply indicating that I wouldn't even consider a new 4Runner until the 6th Gen came out. Definitely not if BlackWorksInc is right about it being based on the 3rd Gen Tacoma. If it doesn't meet my standards, I'll continue to purchase 4th Gens (or an 80 series). Truthfully, I love my 4th Gen and consider it the perfect vehicle for my needs.

In reading your signature...what are your thoughts on the Sequoia you own? Size compared to a 4th gen, as well as the v8 power comparatively to a 5th gen? :yo:

Took the words right out of my mouth the TRD BRO, is nice, but by no means an offroad warrior, and the minute you said Rav4 Discovery I was wondering why Toyota is trying to compete in the Trailhawk region....I mean there can only be so many 45 year old males who convinced their wife that they NEEDED a "TRAIL RATED" compact SUV...haha

The Sequoia is my wife's DD, and was the go-to family hauler for many years. She absolutely loves it ... currently sitting at about 280K and we have no desire to get rid of it. The difference in how it drives and how it feels (in terms of size) between the Sequoia and the 4th Gen would be comparable to the difference between the 4th Gen and my 3rd Gen. A much smoother, more refined ride. Plenty of power/torque from the V8 ... accelerates well (from a stop and when merging at highway speeds) and tows like a champ.

I had a 2010 Trail Edition. Bought it and never went off road with it.... didn't want to scratch an expensive machine like that. Then I moved to Arizona and traded it for a new Caddy. Missed having a more utility vehicle, so I bought a Jeep Rubicon to go with the Caddy. Didn't like the harsh ride of the Jeep, or the noise and spartan interior. I ended up buying my 2007 Sport with the V-8. All I can say, is I love it. I think it handles better than my 2010, cost a hell of a lot less, has a lot of potential for my needs and I am happy. I really don't like the looks of the newer model either (even though I had one!). If the next generation is to my liking, maybe I'll sell the Caddy and my '07 and go for a new one...will wait and see.

I'm looking at 5th gens because the headroom on the 4th gens is terrible. I'm only 6'1", but my head brushes the ceiling, and Toyota apparently thought being able to adjust the seats downward was unnecessary.

What am I missing? Did not every model come with height adjustable seats?

I have that adjustment on mine...

I am 6'6" and have owned a 08' Sport Edition (black cloth patterned seats) and now have an 05' Limited. My Limited seats definitely have more adjustability built into them giving me more headroom.
LTDSC did a mod to the rear seat mount that gained him a lot of headroom as per his build thread. FYI

keeping 4th gen buying 5th gen.

She travels to the beach alone at night and was nervous in a ten year old car with 104k miles.
Two things have broken as of late, the alternator and a half shaft boot.
It's no longer a kind world for women broken down alone. If it ever was.
The 5th gen 2016 is now the beach car and the 2008 is the around town driver.
It makes her happy, and it fits the budget. No, we don't wish to sell the one owner well maintained 2008, because where could we find such a creme puff.

My '04 Sport driver seat is not adjustable. I'm tall and have to take off my hat to drive, no biggy. But, I also have to slump down to look at stop lights. No regrets, I love the Runner, but at the time I got the Runner, I couldn't find a suitable Sequoia, which was what I was after.

I have no desire to buy a 5th gen 4-Runner

I bought my 2006 Limited T4R back in 2011 and don't have any future plans in selling or trading it in for a 5th gen T4R. I originally bought mine because I love the body style and the V8. Mine just went over the 100,000 mile mark on the odometer and I'm looking forward to putting on another 100,000

Thanks for all that info... I have an SR5 with manual height adjustment and I just assumed they were all the same if not better on things like the Limited.

Maybe it's an SE thing? All I know is I have lumbar, seat tilt, forward/back, and recline adjustments, but no outright up/down.

Huh, so maybe it's just a Limited feature? That would be obnoxious, but good to know at least. I'll try to find that mod/build thread, too, thanks.
