Performance chips?

Hey ladies and gentlemen! My question for any to help me out is i found the Gforce performance chip and I haven't heard anything bad about the chip in bigger SUV/Truck type vehicles, has anyone used it or had it before in their 4Runner? I have seen the only times it under performs is in smaller tuner cars from reviews i have read about it. Please someone help me out!

What do you get out of the chip, what don't you get that the company promises.... etc...

P.S. I have a 2003 SR5 V8 not the sports package.

there are a few threads on the topic of chips, just do a search, but you may not get the answers were hoping for.
 
So do you have any recomendations? I think its pretty obvious to say you get what you pay for right? so if you spend $500 plus on chips, how much more do you really get?
 
on a naturally aspirated stock v8? not enough. modifying an ecu is *usually* for high-strung racing engines that have specific mods or expectations at certain rpms etc. a "chip" for a 4runner is snake oil my friend.

i recommend you look in to an aFe pro dry s filter, maybe some new NGK IX iridium plugs depending on mileage, throw a muffler/cat-back on and be happy with the solid power that this motor makes all while lasting 300k miles.
 
I just wanted to add to this convo about what a chip is doing to add performance...

The ECU has a programmed air/fuel ratio. often refered to as rich or lean. A rich running vehicle (like most stock engines) are wasting a little power. By leaning out the air/fuel ratio with less fuel the combustion in the cylinder becomes hotter, more heat means more energy, more energy applied to the piston means more horsepower. They can claim gas mileage gains because indeed you are burning less gas and creating more power.

heres the catch... "but whats the cost??" the cost of chips varies apon manufacture, as well as abilities the chip provides. Some just wire inline with the ecu to the fuel delivery system making adjustments to the ECU's output. Others wire into the ECU itself also offering heads up displays of EGT's, Tranny Temps, Oil pressure stuff like that.....

what about the hiddin costs... what is this going to effect over time....

Back in the carburator days guys running hot rods just had to take a screw driver and lean out the fuel mixture to gain more power. worked great until they realized if you lean the mixture out to much and get the combustion fire to hot you'll actaully burn a hole in the top of your piston. (not good) luckily for them they had a screw to turn and adjust they could run it in or out accordingly and prevent any unnecessary damage. Where as with us newer EFI guys we're taking something a company has decided is a sufficienct air/fuel ratio and putting it into a computer chip to override what toyota's engineers determined as a safe fuel mixture for long term life of the vehicle. Now yes you do have emission standards that might have effected how rich the mixture was dialed in by toyota but, unless you have a way of knowing how hot your combustion is you wouldnt know if your damaging anything until your pulling your heads to check for a hole in your piston. just my knowledge of Computer chips (FYI we have alluminum topped pistons, the old hot rod guys alot of times had steel topped pistons and they managed to burn holes in them alluminum melts even faster!)
 
so would a simple throttle body spacer, new pistons, and a good air intake be just perfect for the performance of the car?

I havn't heard many reviews of the TB spacers being worth wild, The intakes on these trucks are already cold air setups they just lack a high flow filter. If you plan to go in and add new pistons to the engine then you have a whole world of options to build this engine... let me get you to a company you may be interested in....

don't have experience with them on the runner, but tb spacers are a bit of a hoax too and i wont get in to the physics of modern efi. aha is right about different types of chips and their applications. my point was that you shouldn't mess with yotas engineering design unless you're throwing some boost and many other mod at a motor. then you'll run in to rod problems and a whole other can of worms.

i see no reason to replace pistons and would see that as pointless but to each his own. what are you trying to accomplish?

Most modern engines are direct injection meaning the fuel and air don't meet til in the cylinder so a TBS is rendered useless so people need to know these are a bogus part that does nothing.
 
I want to beat every car or truck in a drag race. And that wasn't even my runner.... I just creamed on the supercharged engine but the engine with twins is beautiful! Im not trying to put together this engine with stuff in a ctolog, im going by what people on this website have done and what works.

you gave it away by using the term twins. anyone who knows what twins are would know that the chip is bogus. cheers to you, thanks for cluttering the forum.
 
dont waste your money. its not as easy as throwing a chip in. engineers like me spend lots of time reprogramming and flashing ecu's for different cars and their performance levels.

So what is your take on the on/off piggy back units like the Venom400 for instance, is it just fooling the TPS and leaning out the mix? Had a buddy run one on a vtec and swore it was like having electronic NoS.
