I've been doing research on power/performance upgrades for my rig.
I looked into superchargers and turbochargers. Superchargers were to expensive, and i'd have to get one special ordered for my year. Turbochargers were more in the price range except i'd have to install inter coolers and all that good stuff, which is a bit much for me, and i don't feel like spending the extra $$$ to get it installed at my shop. so that ruled those two out.
I looked at just about every chip on the market, APR x-1 through URD. The only chip i found that actually turned out to be a legitimate boost was the APR x-1, but that involved changing cam gears, once again a little too much work since it involves opening the engine. All the piggy-back chips that promised 30% increase for just $100 were clearly fake, and i think everyone will agree with me on those.
An air intake was the first feasible power gain. With the more air coming in, the more gas can be pushed into the cylinders. From what i'd read, the stock air intake may actually be decreasing the amount of air that could come in, so theres no danger in hurting the engine. A K&N cool air intake with an up to 13 hp gain @ 5012 rpm seems like a good start.
Exhaust was the second one that proved some power upgrade. Higher torque and horsepower in the lower RPMs seems like a good addition. The part I'm unsure about, is dual exhaust vs single exhaust. From what i've found, single is the better choice, lighter, more power, less expensive. Dual keeps the exhaust from the separate sides of the v shaped engine apart while expelling, but they're heavier so the power gain almost gets blocked by the extra weight.
I've heard that adding headers would also add some hp, not sure, would love to hear input on that part.
that's what i've found from my readings, i have no idea how much of this is right, so if any of you find something that you know to be incorrect, please let me know.
I'd also like confirmations on these, because i plan on installing the lower three if they check out ok.
I own a 2004 v6 4.0 sr5
:thanks:
