performance upgrades

I've been doing research on power/performance upgrades for my rig.

I looked into superchargers and turbochargers. Superchargers were to expensive, and i'd have to get one special ordered for my year. Turbochargers were more in the price range except i'd have to install inter coolers and all that good stuff, which is a bit much for me, and i don't feel like spending the extra $$$ to get it installed at my shop. so that ruled those two out.

I looked at just about every chip on the market, APR x-1 through URD. The only chip i found that actually turned out to be a legitimate boost was the APR x-1, but that involved changing cam gears, once again a little too much work since it involves opening the engine. All the piggy-back chips that promised 30% increase for just $100 were clearly fake, and i think everyone will agree with me on those.

An air intake was the first feasible power gain. With the more air coming in, the more gas can be pushed into the cylinders. From what i'd read, the stock air intake may actually be decreasing the amount of air that could come in, so theres no danger in hurting the engine. A K&N cool air intake with an up to 13 hp gain @ 5012 rpm seems like a good start.

Exhaust was the second one that proved some power upgrade. Higher torque and horsepower in the lower RPMs seems like a good addition. The part I'm unsure about, is dual exhaust vs single exhaust. From what i've found, single is the better choice, lighter, more power, less expensive. Dual keeps the exhaust from the separate sides of the v shaped engine apart while expelling, but they're heavier so the power gain almost gets blocked by the extra weight.

I've heard that adding headers would also add some hp, not sure, would love to hear input on that part.

that's what i've found from my readings, i have no idea how much of this is right, so if any of you find something that you know to be incorrect, please let me know.

I'd also like confirmations on these, because i plan on installing the lower three if they check out ok.

I own a 2004 v6 4.0 sr5
:thanks:

well the biggest power gain you can do is sell that V6, and get a 2005+ V8.
If you don't get a V8 for more power, you are wasting a lot of money off the start.

Also the rotary gurder will gain you a few ponies for cheap, and will make a HUUUGE difference when you super-turbo charge it later. race fuel, rip the interior out for less weight, and lose some weight yourself. this is some quality, expensive advice, but you get it for free today, because I'm in a good mood.
Good luck with everything

You don't have to ask this one, its a service that comes free with membership hehe

It's depends on your budget. As for any real seat of the pants power, you mind want to give forced induction another look, but its expensive. If all your wallet will allow is a CAI and exhausts then get that but keep in mind that power gains will be marginal and soon forgotten leaving you wanting more. But they'll look and sound good :D

I got a K&N intake after about a year, mostly noticed better MPG and throaty growl that makes me think i have more power!
Got the TRD exhaust from toyota.

been dreaming of this for years but never cowboyed up and did it so far:
Unichip - 2004 Toyota 4Runner tuning chip | car tuning

Ya i looked into the unichip, the problem with that is, it's just a plug n play. It changes the timing a little bit, but idk if that's really worth the $600. Not to burst your bubble, i could be wrong though.

your best bet is honestly go on urdusa.com and pick up a afe cold air intake and get a set of doug thourley long tube headers if you want thoes and a urd cat back exhaust with the maf cal tuner best set up on the 4.0 tacomas which is the same as the 4th gen 4runner and if you need alot of help for the 4.0 engine also check out xr-underground.com and you will find alot of helpful info for performance parts

I wasn't hurting for more power passing Porsche's, miata's with ls1 and M3's at msr. And yes that is in the V6

I have k&n and I didnt notice anything... however long-term it is cheaper (maybe there are a few hp differences that I don't notice)...u can also take out the filter just past the air filter closer to the engine...I didnt notice anything from that either.

Yes headers will add hp, the car is "computer-controllered" but once it realizes you can get rid of exhaust quicker (header/exhaust ) and suck in air quicker (k&n) it will adjust the fuel ratio and you will get results......especially from exhaust and headers....but remember you aren't driving an X5M...I would put money into off-road enhancements, but to each their own.

Well said, I had a charger try and pass me once so we both sped up, probably going 80 i was a few feet ahead when i got stuck behind a saturn going 35 -_- the finish was right around the corner. Needless to say i don't like people speeding up to pass me when they're just going to slow down again. Not to sound like a jack*** haha just me having some fun

IMO I think the V6 is plenty fine. These are SUVs not racecars. They are purpose built for hauling sh*t and a lil 4x4 :)

If you want a fast car buy a different car....

But if you ARE set on making it fast I vote Build your V6. These motors have some good potential. I would start with a stage 2 cam, stiffer valve springs, and some long tubes. With these mods youre looking a 30% HP increase over stock easy!

I plan to do this when my motor needs a rebuild. Best of both worlds. another 60 or so HP and rear wheel drive! Its kinda like having your cake and eating it too...

Ya i've been looking into building an engine, just don't know where to start since i don't want to take the one i have in there out, more just build a new one, but don't know what one i'd have to buy.
