Performance V6 vs V8

You appear to have something against the Toyota V8 in the 4Runner! I've read your posts and quite frankly, you really have little idea what you're talking about when it comes to the V8 in the 4Runner. Seems like you're obsessed with defending your choice of the V6 when many if not all the owners of the V8 really enjoy the engine.....

The engine is far smoother, quieter and getting back to the original thread... has better performance/POWER, especially when pulling through the high passes and mountain roads.
....
IMHO, the V8 that's in the 4Runner is one of the best engines I have ever driven!

It appears to me that whenever these V6 vs V8 threads come up, the V8 folks simply know that their engine is 'fine'. It also appears than some of the V6 owners have to convince others through their incessant posts that they do not in fact have 'V8 envy'.

If I could have my way, I'd choose the V8 coupled with the V6's 4th Gen. drive train. This way you could the best of both worlds.

.....

I agree with you 100%. Thank you for posting.

I own a V6 and I have V8 envy, but it doesn't make me dislike the V6. You can't go wrong with either engine if you really crunch the numbers and determine your needs. The V6 noise doesn't bother me... it's a truck. I wouldn't want to hear that noise in my sports sedan though.

I really think it's a shame they aren't offering the V8 in the new 4Runner. Used V8 4Runners will probably be highly desirable if they don't add a v8 to the 4Runner in the future. Kinda like a 7.3L diesel in a Ford Excursion is a desireable used tow vehicle now.

I have towed my boat with a few full size GM trucks and I agree they are pretty weak. Towed with friends' 5.7L Yukon and 5.3L 1/2 ton Sierra and neither of them towed well. My old 4.6L Explorer blew both of them away.

This is my first Toyota. I have been a Honda and Ford guy for years. Honda Pilot wasn't an option because it's a cross over and Exploder transmissions are weak.

Would anyone even consider the 4 cylinder in the new 4Runner? We could start that thread... V4 vs. V6. Then I could be the top dog with the V6.:driving:

V8 Right for Colorado

For me, the V8 is a far better choice than the V6 here in Colorado for my personal needs.

The engine is far smoother, quieter and getting back to the original thread... has better performance/POWER, especially when pulling through the high passes and mountain roads.

This is not to say the V6 is not a good engine. It is! And I've been driving Toyota engines, straight 4's, straight 6's, V6's, and now a V8 for thirty five years.

BTW, my V8 pulls my sailboat trailer through the mountain passes... with ease! I've been in 4th Gen V6's and the engine is working hard, making LOTS of noise when pulling the same boat.

Forgot to mention... when I step on the throttle of the V8... you can feel the torque of the engine! I personally prefer this to the V6's response.

I have driven an '02 'Runner and then traded up to an '03 V8 LTD. All I can say is wow. I have owned BMW's, Mercedes', Jeep Cherokee and an Infiniti G35X. The V8 in the Toy is one of the most refined engines I have ever driven. My significant other has an '06 SR5 'Runner V6. My V8 is much better at just about everything except for about 1-2 mpg's. For the engine and extras, the V8 is much, much better. Gobs of low-end torque, plenty of get up and go. I don't do any towing at all, but frequently put 2 adults, 3 teenage boys, two dogs (one being a German Shepard) and the largest cargo box Thule makes (Adventurer) on top and take it on 6-7 hour road trips here in Colorado. The V8 never strains, no matter what kind of grade or road we're on. There is no way the '06 V6 would/could do that. The price differential was about 2-3 grand (I paid 17+/-) between the V8 LTD and a stripped '03 V6. For me, there was no choice. The V8 was/is a proven, refined, powerful engine that suits me just fine in the mountains of Colorado. That being said, until Toyota offers a V8 option in the 5th Gen., they've lost me. My next step would just be another V8 LTD, just newer.
Btw, I go crawling in Moab, Ut.frequently (once a month) and the '03 LTD V8 is just amazing off-road. Bone stock, I've never gotten remotely stuck. The low-end torque is perfect for off-roading...

Its about time, the V8 as Ive said before comes form a 75k lexus that was designed for the worlds worst conditions. The Lx470/land cruiser is one of, if not the most over engineered civilian car on the market. The entire electronic ignition system of the V8 is completely different to that of the 6. It doesnt have an EGR system - engineers did this because is in some parts of the world the gas is so bad, having an EGR system would shorten the life of the engine. Iron block, FORGED internal components unlike its US sister counterpart....the list goes on and on. Premium iridium plugs etc etc.

How many V8 failures on here or mud have their been since it went into production on 98? NONE

How many V6 failures - I think 2 warped long blocks and 2 blown head gaskets on this site alone.

Nuff Said. V6 IS NOT COMPARABLE to the V8 in ANY WAY.

The V8 is multiple tiers above the V6 in EVERY way except mileage - big ****ing deal.

Toyota better pull their head out of their A$$ and put the 4.6 V8 in the 4Runner. The 4.6 is the PERFECT engine for the 4Runner. I did not think Toyota could refine the 4.7 any better then it already was but the 4.6 has to be the smoothest, most refined engine I have ever driven. Also the 6 speed trans is amazing.

I totally agree!

This engine and tranny combo 'was supposed' to be in the 5th Generation 4Runner. None of my friends at Toyota could give me an explanation why it 'was pulled'.

Could be the severe recession. Or the CAFE standards. Overall fleet mileage concerns appear to be overblown and not valid or inapplicable.

I test drove the 5th Gen. V6 and found it... for lack of a more 'appropriate' word: lacking. Plus the disappearance of the Torsen differential... that too was a cost saving... idiotic move.

I've got a 96 cu inch Harley 2010 Fatboy... about to receive within a month a 2011 103 cu inch Road King Classic... it's all about torque!

Every time I drive the 4Runner V8... I get a smile on my face when I hit the throttle. Same feeling I get when I'm on the Harley.

I like my 4.7 V8, wish Toyota would put the 5.7 on the 4Runner.

X2! There is no real comparison, for me. I love having that V8 power whenever I want or need it. Recently coming from an '02 'Runner SR5 (w/sunroof, leather, upgraded stereo) to my "MoonShadow" '03 has been night and day. Don't get me wrong, I loved my '02. However, it didn't come close to the power I needed and was used to. Loved the design, but I found the performance really lacking. I kind of fell into the '03, V8 and Ltd. And I had to travel by air to get it. Where I live is far too small of a pool to find a nice 'Runner. They're great mountain-town vehicles and there are a lot here, but the turnover is small and unpredictable. The point is again, WOW, what a difference. I bought mine at 76k miles and plan to keep it in the family long past 200k. Btw, the maintenance of the V8 over the V6 is IMO, really nothing above average for such an engine. Same for the slightly less mpg's...I've now got a 23.5 gallon tank instead of the 18.5 on the '02. Bottom line is I can now go further on a tank. That's a big plus for my driving-style...:nicethread:

You're right and wrong.

You're right that I have something against the V8, which is why I didn't buy it. I didn't need or want to pay extra money for something I don't need.

People who get on this forum and try to compare the V6 and V8 are ridiculous because these are two different vehicles that cost 2 different prices when purchased new.

You're wrong that there's any sort of envy. If I wanted a V8 T4R, I would have bought one. If I want one now, I will go trade my V6 for a V8.

My 2003 V6 is worth over $15K right now and I can trade it in for any of these V8's that are in my local area.

Used Toyota 4Runners at carmax.com

Not going to happen. Don't need it. Don't want it.

Just for the record, I've come from owning a 2007 5.7 Tundra. That thing was a PIG. It towed great, but the mileage was horrendous. I'm going to keep my 4runner for a while, but after reading a few articles I'm either going to a small diesel half ton Ram (5.0 V8 diesel), or if that doesn't make it, an Ecoboost F150. I would love to stay in the Toyota family but they won't release a small diesel or something that gets decent mileage! The 5.7 is a pig!

My parents have a 5.7 tundra and they love it so far (it only has 4k miles), and they used to own my 4.7 4runner. So far the mileage around town is about the same and the mileage while towing our travel trailer is significantly better than the 4runner. However the 5.7 doesnt seem to be nearly as refined and smooth as the 4.7.

Just like many have said, it is a complete shame that there is no 4.6 option in the 4runner and even the taco for that matter. Its gotta be because of cafe standards and partially because of the economy.

My last words on this topic: There is no way around it, the v8 is the better/more capable powertrain. If are ok with the extremely small decrease in mileage and the extra cost (if any) of the v8, then it is the better choice, no ifs ands or buts about it

I'm glad someone can finally admit this. If the V6 is not comparable to the V8, then the V8 owners need to stop comparing them.

Nobody is on this forum trying to say that the V6 is better or more refined than the V8. Nobody.

Different price, different requirements, etc.

Whatever im done here, I have an 8 and am happy. You are too - or at least thats how you rationalize it to yourself.

Everyone is right. Right now, I am going to go use my V6 and head up to the mountains with my wife and two kids in the car. I hope I can make it. That's a lot of weight.

Jeep engineers eliminated the EGR on the '91-up H.O 4.0L I6s for the Cherokee and Wrangler, for example. No big deal.

The 4.6 is a smaller 5.7 (from the Tundra) and has nothing to do with the '90s-era "Lexus" V8 (Lexus was a marketing thing Toyota came up with for U.S. and Canadian markets to sell gullible people something supposedly "exclusive" -- everywhere else in the world, "Lexuses" or "Lexi" are just "Toyotas")

Promblem is, Toyota piled on 200-300 lbs. more weight on the 5th Gen. 4Runner so there's no benefit -- V8 weight with V6 power.

I like my 4.7 V8, wish Toyota would put the 5.7 on the 4Runner.

Brother, the 5.7 physically fits anywhere a 4.6 will. The 4.6 is in the new Lexus-4Runner, so I'm guessing the 5.7 should physically fit in there as well.

I'm glad someone can finally admit this. If the V6 is not comparable to the V8, then the V8 owners need to stop comparing them.

I said before, ferchrissake, V8s will ALWAYS be smoother than V6s. There's zero debate. V6s, however, usually will be lighter, smaller and cheaper to buy and maintain.

If I had really wealthy parents I could live off of and not have to work, I'd buy a bunch of machine tools and figure out a way to make a 4.7L V6 and then we'd have an interesting forum thread.

Mike,

Don't take this the wrong way but you have no idea what you are talking about. There is a huge difference between Toyota and Lexus, especially now more then ever. Just take a 5 minute test drive or even sit in a Lexus.

The 5.7 is great engine but it is way too much for the 4Runner, especially when it comes to mileage. Take a GX460 on a test drive and you will see the 4.6 would be a perfect match.
