Hey folks,

Two years ago (next month) I invested into a set of P.I.A.A 'Nighthawk' H-11 lowbeam, and a set of P.I.A.A. H-3 520 Series foglight; which I've been more than satisfied with since I dropped them in. I rather enjoy doing some of these smaller mods ($100 to $200 bucks); you can get done with them pretty quick, they don't kick you where it hurts ($$$$$), even if it doesn't work quite the way as expected, but if it does, you've just made an improvement to your vehicle that you can... "well, you know"... :cool:

There are three pairs of bulbs that I'm interested in replacing: (1) the Low beams (2) Overhead Center Console (Dual map lights) (3) Backup Lights

So this year I wanted to change/upgrade a couple of other bulbs where increasing the amount of light dispersion would actually improve on the level of visibility and safety when driving at night! I'm still waiting for the 'Low beams' and 'Overhead Console Map Lights' to arrive. Well the Philips #921 led's 'Backup lights arrived on Thursday... Here's what they look like:

The price is very reasonable @ $19.28 for a pkg of two (on Amazon), plus FREE S&H! They come with a 12 years lifetime warranty. I had hoped to swap the bulbs on Friday afternoon but I was really busy, so I did it much later in the evening (in the dark); here's how it went:

TAIL LIGHT ACCESS PANEL


GENTLY RELEASE ACCESS DOOR LATCH WITH POCKET SCREW-DRIVER: "See small notch for opening on lower left"


RED ARROW POINTS TO THE "BACKUP LIGHT" SOCKET


JUST TWIST (1/8 TURN) COUNTER CLOCKWISE AND REMOVE O.E.M.

Here's a comparison of the two bulbs


NOW HERE'S THE NEW 'LED' READY TO BE INSTALLED (1/8 TURN CLOCKWISE)


LIGHTING UP THE WHOLE PARKING LOT!


YOU CAN'T LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE BACKUP LIGHTS, THEY'RE THAT BRIGHT!




These leds' are very "Bright White"; extremely helpful when trying to back out of my very dark parking lot! The installation took maybe... 10 minutes; and that's with taking pictures!

I believe there was, and in the same fashion of all lighting threads, it went way off topic. I have high hopes for this re-release.....however I am used to disappointment at this stage in my life so we will see where the 4Runner community takes it. I'm starting to think that Toyota should make these vehicles less reliable so we have something to talk about.

It's a good problem to have.

Back on topic, I've got these on order and I'm really anxious! I need to look into marker lights too, but the hyper flash possibility, and inconsistent spread has me on the fence.
 
I was a little let down with the performance of these. The color is definitely nicer, but they aren't that much brighter. For the price I'm still happy with them just for the color change alone. But I wish they were brighter.
 
Thanks for the detailed write up! I have Philips LEDs in my map lights and they're awesome. I installed these last night and they're just like your photos; bright white light.
 
Just installed mine this morning. Looking forward to testing them out tonite. My side windows are tinted dark and a lot of times when parallel parking I'd have to roll down the right window so I could see what I was doing via the mirror. I'm hoping that these are bright enough to where I no longer have to do that.
 
Dome light question

I've done the backup light and front console light upgrade but now my rear dome light is a dim orange color as compared to the new crisp console lights. I haven't seen any discussion on the dome light and was curious if it takes the same type of bulb as the console lights.

Bulb size guide for 5th gens.

Fellas, here is a site that tells what bulb size every courtesy, puddle, map, dome, cargo lamp needs on the 5th gen. Just follow the link, input the vehicles info and follow the page to the interior section. Just as a note, you can buy the whole kit and watch the install on youtube. I got my kit for roughly $120 shipped. It even included the tag lights as well.

Just installed that package yesterday! Looks 100 times better, and now I can actually see around the interior.

I can tell you the philips 3175 LED was a big disappointment. whiter light, but no brighter than stock. maybe even not as bright. I removed it, put it in one of the tailgate lights. no better.

i found some led on ebay for the other lights and i had to put in a resistor to keep from flashing. i'll have to take a pic later and post what i did. if you would like.
 
I have those eBay bulbs, as do many other users here, and they seemed to work great.

One of my license plate bulbs kept screwing up, which is the only one that actually matters. so I had to replace that one. The replacement has been good.

I now have a few others that are flickering. One of my rear hatch ones is continual, and my driver door is hit or miss. My passenger vanity mirror has simply stopped working.

For 20$ they are great, but the little prongs seem to have a lot of play, and I think they are the issue.

I plan on slowly swapping them all out for a higher quality/better made bulb.

Oh, and be prepared for the dome light festoon to not really fit. You can jam it in, and it'll work fine, but it's not easy.

Cool. That is good to know. I wonder if I can bend the prongs a bit for a better fit.
 
Xenondepot had a 20% off flash sale last night (I should have posted here about it, but it was late). I ordered Philips for all of my interior, back up lights, and license plate. I'll post pics once they arrive and are installed.

I bent the hell out of mine, and it still barely fit. It's cocked at some weird angle, but it works.

God damnit. I have been waiting to get a set of HIDs from them. Wonder if that 20% would have stacked with the T4R code.
