I've just been using this Beam holder. I've had it for about a year and it's still holding up perfectly. It stays in the vents above the climate control pretty firmly. You can get it on Amazon for 7 bucks.

I've using a RAM X-Grip, suction-cupped with a short arm to the windshield, positioned to the left of the steering wheel. Only downside of the X-Grip: It takes [me] two hands to attach/detach the phone.
I'd switch to a vent holder if I found one that looked solid and was easy/efficient to operate.

i-ottie stick-to-windshield “clamp” it was $20 at Best Buy when I decided to grab one last minute prior to a road trip and it works great... the suction cup is kinda sticky and has never fallen off

I have the scosche magic mount and the only downside i can think of is you have to stick a very thin magnet to the back of your phone or the back of your phone case like im running it, the magnet is very very strong, i use it when offroading to look at the trail im on, and it doesnt even come close to coming off, i also love that its a one handed operation and is tiny compared to all other mounts so its not an eye sore when phone isnt mounted.

I went with one of the RAM mounts and was able to attach it to the A-pillar handle. The phone mount is a little big, but it is very sturdy.

This is the one I've been using and it works amazing.
Screw the ones you put on the windshield, they don't hold up good in cold weather here in Michigan or even super hot summer as it melts it and you end up with gooey shit.
I have a UAG phone case, never use wireless charging so if I had to switch phones and ran out of the 2 metal plates that came with the above mount, I just got these Amazon.com: Metal Plate for Phone Magnet, 10 Pack Volport MagicPlate with 3M Adhesive Replacement for Magnetic Phone Car Mount Holder & Cradle & Stand ( Vent / CD / Windshield / Dashboard ) - Rectangle and Round and they work with no issues so far on my S21+

Here's the actual mount (before powder coating):
It is made of heavy gauge steel, so you can attach a double sided magnet directly to it to hold a phone. You can also use the AMPS mounting pattern on the mounting flange, to use almost any phone mount you can find.
The mount attaches to the dash in two places, using VHB industrial tape. That's strong enough for most flush type phone holders.
We also have the "Extreme" version, which uses two additional pop fasteners to attach the mount to the dash, to handle extended type phone holders like the RAM X-grip system or the Panavise:
The mount holds the phone where it's easily viewable and accessible, without blocking your field of view, the vents, or other buttons:

I have a similar one I got from Wal Mart. Best 15 bucks I’ve ever spent on on a phone holder. The only thing I don’t like is sometimes it seems out of nowhere it doesn’t stick. 98% of the time is does, perhaps hot day scenario.

Where was this when I needed it a year ago? Lol! Looks like a fantastic design and I'm tempted to replace mine prematurely. When you have a phone attached to it does it block any of the road? I have an iPhone 8 so not small but not a handheld tablet like some phones now.

It shouldn't block view of the road, it is mostly in line with the top of the hood. So if you can see over the hood, you should be able to see over the phone. You also have some flexibility in how high or low you place the phone on the mount.
