Photo Timeline of my 4Runner {LOTS OF PICS}

I've missed this little guy...

Finally got the drain plug in and filled the diff...took it a few times around the block in 4HI- The Tru-Trac feels GREAT! You can definitely feel it in the steering wheel, but it's not like a front locker. It's absolutely bearable on dry pavement (if need be), I'd compare the feel to driving with the front tires aired down to 10-15 psi. I'll be keeping it in 4HI for the next 500-1000 miles for break-in...shakedown run is November 20 & 21 so I'll have some REAL news on the capability on my traction situation.

Also ordered a set of Tokico Trekmasters from an FJZ80 (like brian2sun) to replace my blown out (and flex-hindering) Skyjackers.

you will feel invincible with locker and lsd, you pretty much have done everything now except exo cage good job.

Bryan you'll have to let me behind the wheel just for a few feet in your truck once we meet up at RC haha... It's a whole nother machine now haha. I promise I'll drive it carefully??:vader:

That's a lot of break-in miles and you'll be averaging approx. 50 miles to attain 1000 miles by the 20th for the shakedown run...go easy on her now bud. Congrats on havin' the 4x4 back and much more.!

I've never heard of anyone driving around in 4hi for 500 miles after a gear install. The components move from the front wheels turning anyways so no need to have it in 4x4. When I did my gears, I specifically asked Midwest Gear and they told me don't worry about the breaking in the front. Not that it would hurt if you did, but gas won't be cheap.

When i inquired with North Shore Off Road about a possible gear change, they advised about the break-in period of 1k, re-iterating normal driving.

I broke in my gears over ~500 miles and let it cool down after every 20-30 minutes, but I was just saying that the front diff doesn't have to be engaged in 4hi, it turns regardless.

The carrier turns but the ring and pinion don't...they need to be broken in too

Well hell, you're right. I wasn't thinking. I guess I'm still breaking mine in, LOL! That's cool though, they don't whine. I still haven't heard of anyone doing that, but I'm sure it won't hurt.

The more I think about it...
You don't need to break in your front because "breaking in" means not running it longer than 20-30 miles at a time for the 1st 500-1000 miles to make sure the gears don't get too hot so they get a good footprint. If you're running in 4x4 on a trail you don't really have to worry about heat because you're going slow and you don't generally travel very far distances in 4x4.

Straight highways and low speed doesn't matter for LINY though because he has multi-mode 4x4. In my truck, I have to stay under 45 or so and not turn corners on the pavement in 4x4 because I have a traditional t-case. LINY can unlock his center diff and drive in 4hi and it's essentially the same as AWD. As far as breaking it in though, everyone I know just breaks front gears in on the trail since you don't have a choice with a standard 4x4 system.

And yeah, around here there are lots of highways you don't want to go faster than 45 (I live in the mtns).

01-02 = Multi-Mode 4WD :thumb3:

4HI= AWD
4HI w/ center diff locked = 4WD

So does the truck still act normally until you lock the center diff? I mean when does the front LSD kick in ? Like do you now have 2WD, AWD, 4WD, 4WD HI unlocked rear/locked rear w/ semi locked front, 4LOW unlocked/locked w/ semi locked front?

The LSD is working any time the front diff is powered, i.e. 4WD

my drivetrain options are:
RWD, open/open
RWD, open/locked
AWD, LSD/open
AWD, LSD/locked
4WD HI, LSD/open
4WD HI, LSD/locked
4WD LO, LSD/open
4WD LO, LSD/locked

aren't lsd's just dumb versions of a locker? kind of like a lock rite but with clutch discs? i always though lsd's operated full time regardless of the power going to them, i.e. 2wd or 4wd, they operate more on the torque , i mean do you really have a electronically engaged lsd and if so why not just buy a a real locker that won't wear out clutch's and can be operated with a push button?

i know you know your stuff liny, so i'm not questioning you, i just have never heard of a LSD that works like that before, and would like to know more about it, you got a link with the full info?

In 2WD you can't feel the LSD even the slightest bit...it's gotta be activated by torque...the activation is similar to a lock right, only it's not a positive lock, it's more of a clutch disc that allows some slip, which make it optimum for IFS. A true locker would snap CVs any time you tried to turn on dry pavement under power.
