I was shooting on the first version of the 6D. loved it. it did good for me for many years before upgrading to the 5D. i ended up doing the magic lantern hack to get a lot of features it lacked but otherwise its a solid body and great for nighttime photography

I appreciate the feedback. I till have a lot to learn with photography and judging by how long i kept my 7d, Ill be ready to update to the 5D mkX. Its a vast update for me!

Let my brother borrow my T4R for the week as he and his family go explore the Mountains of North Carolina for a week with his friends. Good news, he gave me his wife's Escape to run around with! Loving the 30mpg to scoot around campus and town to snap some photos

this is my first attempt at taking a Milky Way pano. I've done lots of MW shots getting the core but never a pano. This is 12 shots merged in PS-CC.
I used the photopills app to plan it

How do you get all the shots to line up, when the stars and clouds are moving between shots?

Great shot! Have you been out to a dark skies area to capture the galaxy without light pollution? It's a must! I have this same setup and it's amazing for these kinds of things.

Software for a newbie and beach cleanliness
Afternoon Gents - hopefully I'm not derailing the purpose of the thread with this but...
Recently purchased a Nikon D3400 setup from Costco and really look forward to creating some thread-worthy pics.
I'll be heading to the beach this summer, any tips/tricks for keeping the gear clean? The main thing that pops into mind is in times past, I've had to keep cleaning the haze from my sunglasses and would like to prevent/remedy this with the cameras lenses. Aside from keeping the lense cap on until needed and keeping the gear in the bag..any words of wisdom?
As far as basic editing software goes, I suspect there is probably something more favorable than the s/w from Nikon...preferably with a not-so-steep learning curve for a new guy?

Been a while since I've been in here and even longer since I've done any sort of actual shooting. Need to get my butt in gear! Some amazing shots have been posted. Kuddos.
You can get some good quality B+W filters for your lenses. Or some neutral density filters, be it fixed or variable. A good variable density filter may be a good idea if you plan on doing a bunch of beach time being how bright it can be.
As far as gear in general, you can find good quality camera bags with a built-in rain fly. I find it doubles well if you're in a dirty area and want to keep as much out as possible.
Last I'll say to be VERY careful when you're changing your lenses at the beach (or anywhere outdoors for that matter). The last thing you want to do is to get dirt anywhere near your sensor.

I'd also recommend getting b+w or Hoya filters. Also get one of those air blaster dust blower incase you do get some debris on the lens or sensor.

Lightroom really struggled merging the photos. all of the stars became a blur and looked awful. PS did a good job lining it up. it takes a long time though to photo merge them. you can not load as layers either, you have to either save all as .tiff and photo merge or open from LR > edit in PS as several open tabs.
[MENTION=237550]McNeill[/MENTION] I have not. I really want to make it down there. this is only 20miles east of Denver, it gets dark enough for shots like this. I would love to find a spot with no light pollution.

There's a few things going on here. In a 30 second photo at that wide of focal length, the stars really aren't going to move enough in frame for it to be a problem. The clouds obviously move more relative to the camera in that amount of time.
One really cool trick is to use a program call StarStax. It's free and does of really good job of layering multiple images on top of each other so that it looks like long star trails. You can do that same thing in photoshop, but this other way is free, and works REALLY well.
How far are you from the Winds range in Wyoming? I was there for the eclipse and it gets DARK. Try this: Dark Sky Finder

[MENTION=237550]McNeill[/MENTION] i have used star stax, it does work really nice for a free app.i feel it loses quality a little bit though. you have to at least use .tiffs. i have an action created now in PS to copy / paste / change blend mode / flatten. i got it from this site
i have that dark skies bookmarked, i wish i could zoom in more. it gives a nice general idea. im lucky to be on the edge of town here. if theres no moon i can shoot star trails on my patio. for MW i just need to head half hour east to get on the edge of dark enough skies.
