I didn't do anything as fancy to get the box on, just re-drilled some holes for the mounting points on the ski box so i could mount it forward enough to get the tailgate to clear. The way it's sitting in the picture is the maximum i could attach it towards the rear, i've got less than 1/2 inch gap when the tailgate is up.

My box has a notched area to mount so I had to re-work the rails, I also have about .5" clearance when the gate is up. :cheers:

Yeah I could have done that but I live in the city and was using 7 feet as maximum height due to garage limitations. and I am exactly 7 foot +or- 1". plus it is way stronger now. :cheers:

So I am now considering the discontinued Thule Evolution 1600. It's only $320, opens from one side only which isn't a big deal to me, but does not have the quick connectors. After looking at my stock cross bars, I thought to myself that maybe the quick connector claws wouldn't have enough clearance to close between the roof and factory cross bars. I really don't want to buy another rack system so I feel that the U-bolt for this box will be sufficient. It'll take a few minutes longer to install/remove but I can deal with it.

smart - on my rig that 2"-3" for the mounts puts it up in the air quite a bit and eliminates using parking garages. I'd really like to do ditch the Toyota rack and mount rails, but I haven't built up the courage to be the guinea pig on that yet...

Loaded the Yakima Pro 16 S on factory crossbars up for the UT vs. UGA game tomorrow. Snapped a few pictures in the process as well. The estimated cargo weight is 90 lbs conservatively. A few notes first:

1. The box cleared the rear hatch by about .5" the very first time I put it on the 4Runner, however when I loaded the roof box that clearance disappeared. The spoiler now slightly touches the roof box every time it's opened regardless of whether the roofbox is full or empty. I've added some rubber pads to prevent any major scratching.

2. The gap between the attachment points and the roof of the 4runner is about .25" when unloaded. That gap decreases substantially as cargo is added to the box. To prevent any rubbing or scratching, I've rolled some cotton towels and placed them under the box's attachment points. The tension when the box is loaded holds them in place. The shark fin also clears although that clearance decreases from ~.5" to ~.25" with cargo.

3. Using the Yakima crossbars eliminates the concerns about touching the hatch, roof, or sharkfin. It also makes it slightly more difficult to load the box post-tailgate and doesn't look as cool as the factory crossbars

4. The speed limits / speed of traffic between Atlanta and Athens (and just about everywhere else) are outside of the 4Runner's "efficient" operating range so consequently the mileage just sucks slightly more than normal with the roof box on.

Lookinf for an inexpensive roof top box, all it's going to hold is soft bags of clothes and stuff I have Thule Tow Hitch rack that I'm putting coolers and stuff on, I just need a little more room inside the truck so my two 100lbs + dogs can have more room.

OMG, the memories. Confirmed as the “World’s Largest Cocktail Party”:

This contest between SEC East rivals Florida and Georgia takes place during the last week of October each season in Jacksonville, FL. The tailgating that happens when these two teams travel to a neutral site is legendary.

Here's my Thule Sonic XXL (22 cu ft) box installed on square Thule crossbars. Not shown in these pic I now have the new Thule 450 feet which raises the crossbars about 3/8" from the ones shown in the picture. The new feet also allow you to move the crossbar as far forward as possible which helps minimize/eliminate any contact when the hatch is raised.

I originally had the Thule Cascade 1100XT but needed more space now that I have two kids and two big dogs.

For the Sonic XXL, at highway speeds I do notice from flexing/lift in the front while the clamps are as tight as they allow (ratchet system). I think the flex is simply b/c the box is so big. I imagine when the box is loaded the flexing will decrease, but I have yet to fully load it up and hit the highway.

--- UPDATE ---
I loaded the box with a bunch of camping chairs and tents then hit the highway. The load helped decrease the amount of vertical flex/lift quite a bit at 65-70mph

Does anyone have a Thule Force L 624 mounted to factory crossbars? I am only going to use this a couple times a year and I don't want to deal with the spoiler hitting so I am going with Thule recommendation on size.

Per Thule Fit Guide, only the L would fit, but rest assure that the Force XL will fit too.

I have the Thule Force XL 625 mounted to Thule cross bars which allows you to move the front bar as forward as possible. There is no issue with rear hatch clearance.

I recently used one of these guys for a trip it was actually quite useful and fairly spacious.

Not sure about how it would stand bad weather ..but for a sunny vacation it's GREAT!!
