Picked up a couple New Safes (PICs)

My sons are getting older and able to reach higher, I suspect that sometime in the near future they will be able to reach high enough to accesses a couple of my gun locations with a stool. Gun safety in our house is talked about and exercised and I even make my boys 2, 5, 14 practice muzzle control and trigger awareness on the toy guns they own. But, all that safety is for not if their young minds cannot distinguish between a real and a fake firearm and someone gets needlessly shot.

All that said, I needed a bigger safe. In doing so it was win/win. I got a new safe for the house and I was able to bring my old safe to my office at work.

I had my eye on a Cannon at tractor supply, but....100% by chance i ran into someone who works for Winchester Safe Co. and he made me a deal on a couple safes that I could not pass up.

So I got the Big Daddy safe ( BD-6042-36-11) for myself and an executive office safe (H-4226P-12-11)for my wife.

I was not able to fit all my guns in the big safe, but between the three i was able to get them all locked up.

I would say the hardest parts was bolting my safe to the ground. It took a little dis-assembly and a LOT of drilling (somebody thought 4 3/4 lag bolts would be ideal) into the hardest concrete I have ever drilled. By the time we got to my wife's safe I had decided that 2 would be plenty.....:shrug:

Damn, I need something like that second photo. I don't have that many guns, but have other things I'd like to keep in a safe. Also one that fits my rifle.

there are other safe options out there like my smaller one. The small on i bought has two drawers in it, so a long gun would not fit....but they do offer it without the drawers.
 
That is a very nice safe.

I'm curious, at what age do you let your kids have access (the code) to the safe?

I'm pro gun but I would not let a minor have access to the gun safe code. I might be convinced to let a 16 year old, a mature one have the code.
 
Drool. Very nice. I like the storage on the inside of the door. Did that come standard with the safe?

Oh and good job on locking them up. It's amazing that parents think hiding a gun in a drawer will keep their kids from finding it. Too many stories of kids having their friends over to the house and one of them ends up getting shot when they find a gun in the house. Sorry that's a whole other thread in itself.

To be honest I have not considered giving them access yet, but that's a good question. My 14 year old (15 very soon) shoots with me often, and has for some time. He has shot every firearm I own. But even so, the thought of him having unrestricted access to them gives me an uneasy feeling. I would be afraid he would want to show a friend or something stupid that could go south.

The boys will get the code if society breaks down and it's revilant to their survival. Other than that, they can have their own code when they own their own safe.

Thanks, The storage in the door comes standard, I would have preferred it all be pistol storage so I could put my revolvers there also, but the bags are handy in their own respect.

Guns are a hard subject for parents to teach their children, I suspect in many cases, it's because the parents themselves are not comfortable with them.

I have kept guns in "hidden" places too high for the younger boys to reach for years. But they have stools in each bathroom and as they grow (way too fast) at some point the stool is going to make them tall enough to reach. So I took action before it got to that point.

It's hard to get a 2 year old to take gun safety seriouse (or going to the bathroom in the toilet for that matter). I may be overly cautious because of my years of training in the military and then as a police officer, but I would rather be overly cautious and accident free, than have one of my boys or one of their friends hurt or worse.

I have a very close friend that keeps a loaded shotgun next to his bed (ground level). We have argued about it several times, but in the end it is his choice. He says the kids know not to touch it or even look at it and I believe they do, but the question is; are you willing to bet their lives on it?

Would I like to sleep on a bed of loaded guns so if the world fell apart while I was sleeping I would be prepared and would not have to go to the safe and get guns........sure....I guess........but such are the consequences of being a parent. Lol.
