Picked up my first 4runner last week. Need help.

I have an ECM out of 98 non alarm and a 99 ecm with inmobilizer with key and
Lock set if that helps let me me know if u have interest 7172781702
What u can do to ck is put a timeing light on spark plug wire and have some one crank starter if you see one flash from timing light and no more as engine cranks
Ignition inmobilizer is working and you would need to get a key from dealer
Or replace ECM good luck

Like I was saying the truck is 20 minutes and I only get over that way once or twice a week. I'll be installing the new pump then and I'll take it from there.

Yeah a locksmith friend of mine said it could possibly be a theft /security issue. Like I said, I'll drop new pump in and start with the simple stuff like relays and checking for codes . Really appreciate all the input so far you guys. Thanks

It could still be the pump even though it bench tested fine. It can also be the fuel pressure regulator acting up.

I had a 2001 Sierra come in that had the exact same symptoms. Would start for a second and die. I checked everything on the truck and finally checked fuel pressure. Sure enough it would prime up to 58 psi then once the truck was running the pump couldn't keep up and drop almost instantly. I installed a new pump and that was the end of it.

Yeah the fuel pump wasn't exactly screaming when I tested it but then again I don't know how it's supposed to sound. Where is the regulator on these trucks?

It's on the back of the driver side fuel rail. I tried to take a pic of it for you not sure how much it will help. You can see it best from the passenger side.

Yea it took a few minutes before I could find it. It will have two 10mm bolts holding it on with the one vacuum line.

Also inspect the vacuum line at the regulator and manifold as it may be cracked and not allowing the regulator to function correctly.

Well a phone call to my local Toyota stealership confirmed a mechanics thought. It needs a transponder key linked to the ecu. Since the only key I have is a steel copy it shuts it down instantly. Wish I knew that before I dropped the tank. But I suppose with 245,000 a new pump is good insurance. Oh and the cost of getting a key made that will work....$150. I have hookups!!!!

Order a key, there are many treads of how to program it yourself. You can get one cheap from different sources.

Search for those. Glad it was something simple!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't you need a working master key in order to program new keys?

We recently bought a used 2005 Sequoia, and the dealership lost the original keys a few days before we went to look at it. They had to order and install a whole new transponder ECU that came with a new master key before any more keys could be programmed.

Yeah what I read seems simple enough. Trouble is you still have to have a programmed key to start with from what I read. After that you can 'learn' it to the car. Right?

Aye!

I think that's right. I guess look at as a reason it was so cheap.

Let's hope that is all it is. Makes sense.

Yes, through a hilarious ritual of opening and closing doors, locking and unlocking etc. I read about a lot of different programming methods for different models looking for the right one for our Sequoia, but they all seem to start with an already programmed master key in the ignition.

Plus from what I understand, the ecu tales over fuel pump duties once it starts. Since the key is incorrect, the ecu shuts the whole operation down immediately. Makes sense.

well its running!!!!! I scanned it & I gotta P 1300 igniter circuit code. One call to my local dealership and he said these engines used a system that fires two cylinders simultaneously. He explained where the controller was for that and when I found it, there was one wire pulled free. I pushed it in and it fired right up. Ac works and everything!!! Love it. Thanks for all the replies.
