Pics of T4Rs Used as Technicals?

I'm wondering if anyone has photos of 4Runners (any generation) being used as technicals (improvised fighting vehicle).



I've seen them for Tacomas, but not 4Runners. US SOF has used them:

Not too much out there for T4R/Surfs...SUV duty usually goes to LCs

Generally technicals are far more likely to be trucks than SUVs. I can't really think of any specific examples where I've seen an SUV technical. Wouldn't see a reason why to even do it without the open bed of a truck.

Seen lots of Land Cruiser's not sure I've ever seen a T4R used tactically.

Yeah, I thought so, too. The only reason I can really see using an SUV as opposed to a truck is that you have some sort kind of extremely equipment that you want to keep extra safe, and away from weather/dirt/dust/etc.

To me a "technical" is a vehicle with a permanently mounted gun like a machine gun or recoilless rifle. Hard to do that on anything but a 1st gen 4runner/Surf.

I do have some pics of the Hilux Surf (RHD) that we used as general transportation in Afghanistan in 2003, but it didn't have any weapons mounted on it. We had a 100-series cruiser and a Surf and drove down to Kabul on 3/19/03, the day the war in Iraq started. We were on a sightseeing/shopping trip and we knew it would be our last in a long time because we figured once the war in Iraq started we'd be "locked down" at Bagram.

Yeah. I was going to say, "...but that would make it more of a utility vehicle (which it already is obviously) than an "improvised fighting vehicle". The only exception I can think of is that instead of a top-mounted machine gun on a 4Runner, you had a passenger door-mounted one like I've seen in a few photos. But yeah, a LC would probably make more sense for that. The absolute only reason I could think that this would be useful is that if you needed some fighting capability for a sensitive instrument-carrying vehicle. I'm guessing a NEST fighting vehicle? Looking for nukes in a Pakistani desert? Haha. It seems like in Afghanistan or for extreme long-term expeditionary work, it would be good to have a mechanical support LC or Hilux, carrying 4 tires and extra parts/tools or something like that...

I like the improvised vehicle armor I've seen in a few photos. just dropping body armor over the side of the door, with the window rolled down.

Yep, that is more for a Hilux. I know that the UN used 3rd Gen's in Kosovo.

They are quite interesting. They all look like 99-00 models that are badged as 4Runner's yet have a 3.0 turbodiesel(Cool but slow.). I'm assuming that these were built in Japan. The UN gets their vehicles from Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings.

Awesome. This is nothing compared to the extremely fancy UN SUVs I saw driving around Ramallah. Considering what goes on in that area, I'm sure they get dibs on the best equipment.
