Pikeman Build #2(I am back)

It has been a rough couple years. Terminally Ill son, loosing everything and selling my 98 to another member.

The wife kept seeing me occasionally look in the forum and at pictures of my old 98 and felt that now we are getting back on our feet maybe it was time to have a 4Runner again.

So she found a 99 for me that had a blown motor for very cheap and it is clean. Two days later found a JDM motor for $900 with only 30k miles, and a junk yard one with 170k miles for $800. I of course chose the JDM engine.

This will be a long process but at least I am back in a 4Runner, or will be soon. Here are the first couple pictures.

Engine ready to drop in. When they remove the engines in Japan they just cut the wire harness so you have to use the one in the truck. Also to remove the engine you have to undo the harness as well, so that is why the intake is off. There are also a couple of other things that need to be done to use the JDM engine such as transfer over your exhaust manifolds(or go to headers if they are in the budget) and your intake manifold if there are any differences. I will be using the JDM intake manifolds since it is just slight difference in routing of the vacuum tube brackets.

They cut the harness since it's useless anyway. Not OBD2. I used the original manifold to retain all the original vacuum house routing. Seemed easier IMO.

Thanks SnowRunner. I am looking forward to getting this one on the road and then slowly building her into an offroad expedition monster.

99 SR5 V6 4wd, standard package, not the e-locker version.

Goals:

Suspension- looking at the Sonoran Steel 1.2 Radflo suspension kit.
Bumpers A-Likely build my own bumpers if I can find a place and tools to build them at.
Front Bumper B-If not will look at Addicted Offroad front hybrid plate and with Scotty's permission give it the angry eyebrow look that I enjoyed on the ODL bumper.
Rear B- not sure if I can't build my own will need more research
Sliders- Addicted Offroad
Lights- prefer to go LED but still have my 5" Tungsten Halogen Vision X lights
Tires- BFG KM2's, BFG AT KO2's , Nitto Terra Grapplers or Hankook AT in 285/75/16. Had really wanted the KM2 in the 255/85 size but hear they might or have discontinued that size so will be sticking with the 285's.
9.5k winch with synthetic line and safety thimble.

That is plan but long ways away. Need to get it on the road first.

It's Alive!!

I finally got some more time to work on her this weekend. She is now running and I will be taking her for a short test drive in a little bit.

Had a little setback after putting the engine in, the A/C compressor bracket was different than the US version bracket. This was a PITA with the limited room to work on it. All things in with just a few minor details to finish up to have a highway cruiser and slow build to off-road explorer.

Awesome brother, looking forward to see you get back onto the trails.

Welcome back! So sorry to hear about your son and family's troubles...hope the new runner brings some healing.

Well I have been traveling a lot and was at a stumbling block with my 4 Runner. It had passed the sniff test but the ECU had not finished cycling and picking up all the sensors so it failed the smog test initially. Well I am happy to say that after about 600 miles of driving it finally cycled and recognized everything so on Friday she passed with flying colors. So she is now fully registered and almost ready for driving duties.

While on my last road trip trying to get the miles in I noticed a leaky transfer case that will need to be fixed before I take her on any more long trips. The good news is that with it passing smog and everything my wonderful Wife is allowing me to dream and plan/budget for the build. That is of course after I get the last few leak issues resolved.

Mike, I'm trying to organize another run in the SoCal thread, do you think you'll be all fixed up by April 29-30? Glad to hear about the progress!
