Pioneer NEX radio steering wheel and siri

Question for all you with pioneer nex radios, do you use the steering wheel controls and have you found a way o use siri on the steering wheel? Is it worth adding steering wheel controls with just volume and mode?

I have a 5200 NEX and installed the bluetooth buttons on my SW (it had the OEM 9005 navigation but only had the left-hand volume/next/mode buttons). Anyway they work for phone BT, but no I haven't found a way to use the BT button to contact SIRI.

I'm using the PAC RP4.2-TY11 interface. As others have said, you can say "Hey Siri" but make sure that setting is ON on your iPhone, and i believe it has to be plugged in to a power source. Which it would be if you were trying to use the BT button, obviously.

I've only had the NEX for about 2 months and haven't got on any long trips to test out all the features and the Apple Carplay stuff, but I get the sense that Carplay is the main voice-input feature for the head unit... I guess I'm disappointed that I can't just talk to the Pioneer navi directly ("give me directions to X") without using Apple Maps/carplay.

Again i haven't played around with it much, please let me know if i'm missing some voice input setting. Impressed with the sound, features, video, inputs, etc. but wish it was a little more hands-free without using Carplay.

I have a tiny 128GB flash drive plugged into the non-apple USB slot - songs for days, no messing with radio/pandora/phone/whatever. Pretty awesome.

EDIT: I would say absolutely YES it is worth adding the left-hand side volume/mode controls. I use them all the time. so far, I rarely/never use the new bluetooth right-hand controls that I added though

Yes and second thought, go ahead and get the second bluetooth set. Just made this vid for you and learned some stuff in the process. I'm sure lots of people know this already but I just figured it out, I'm new to this HU and these buttons. The bluetooth steering wheel button WILL contact SIRI even if it's only connected via bluetooth and not CarPlay, you just have to hold it down for a second.

I really need to spend some time with the Pioneer manual/youtube/just playing with it, I'm sure it does a million things I don't even know about yet. Hope this helps.

PS if I could do it over again I'd go 6200 at least so I could get the HDMI input. I have an HDMI port as you can see, but it's connect to the HU via red/white video cables, the 5200 does not have an HDMI input.

PSS I have my Pioneer microphone mounted to my sun visor, work really well but since the visor moves there's a bit of necessary visible slack in the cord between the pillar and visor, hope to figure out a more hidden location with just as good voice soon... Please post after your install.

I was nervous about disassembling airbag but I disconnected battery to be safe, like he said, and it was really easy. You'll want a good set of TORX wrenches before you start
 
Catfish this is exactly why I asked this question and thanks so much for making the video it really helps, now I have to get the right side steering wheel controls!!!

Happy to help, good luck. Just get an interface for the steering wheel controls - i used PAC, it was bulky, hard to fit behind dash and no much help with factory backup cam but it works. Here's some pics/info on my recent adventure. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/2580274-post348.html
 
Catfish, i purchased the same pac interface as you and I've looked at your pics on you install and I'm stumped, the instructions are not really helpful as well. I used pac unit when I installed my pioneer 4400 in my 2003 but this one is way more complex.

Any video that helped you? Seems like many connectors are not used?

You're right the PAC instructions absolutely suck but no I didn't find anything very helpful online. There will be plenty of unused harnesses, both from the PAC and the 4runner. If it doesn't have a match, don't worry, it probably doesn't need to be connected, you'll be surprised. The exceptions would be if you had stock nav and backup camera.

PM me your pioneer model, 4runner year, whether it had stock nav, stock JBL, backup cam, etc. and I'll try to remember/find some stuff.

That's correct. It's an always on feature (assuming your're on a compatible device). If the iPhone is lying on a table, screen down, then Siri isn't listening. It's a feature that can also be turned off in Settings.

Place the mid via a clip right next to the rear mirror on the left side - discreet and has excellent field range

Annonomous, I placed my mic in about the same spot, just left above the rear mirror.

On my othe 4runner it is placed on the left pillar and I didn't notice much difference, are you having difficulties?

Did you come up with the location yourself? The audio shop moved it around for me when I took it in for audio system repair. I intended for the wires to be hidden so I thought underneath the steering wheel was a great location. Well I will be honest with you - after picking up the 4Runner when repairs were completed, I feel like an idiot now.

It's a great location and does not stand out at all whatsoever. I'm just glad these guys did me a solid and made it better while my truck was in their shop! Definitely a repeat customer for services in the future
