Places to go play near San Antonio.

I live in Louisiana, but will spend the better part of this year working south of San Antonio, between Pleasanton and Cotulla. I see we have several members who to live in the SA area. I'm looking for someplace to go play with my 4R during the short breaks I get between wells, when it's just not practical to go home but I need to get away from the rig for a day. I have found the Cline Ranch online, but they seem to be more group and reservation oriented, so I would have difficulty arranging something. I'm not a hardcore rock crawler, or looking to test my skills to an extreme. I'd just like someplace to go try out the 4wd and get a little dirty without tearing up my ride home. Can anybody point me to some worthwhile places?

Welcome to Texas, where the "NO TRESPASSING" signs grow like weeds and 95% of the land is privately owned! Where you are in South Texas, there is nowhere to go play unless you like dirt county roads. The closest place is in Marble Falls at Hidden Falls Park.

Hidden Falls Adventure Park

It's about an hour and a half north of San Antonio on 281 and has lots of trails for fullsize vehicles. I have also seen some guys on the San Antonio section of the FJ forum going wheeling in a local dry creek bed just north of San Antonio. But this is almost certainlly illegal, gives wheelers a bad reputation and opens you up to a fine.

Other than that you can go to Padre Island National Seashore outside Corpus Christi and drive for 60 miles down the beach in a pretty remote area, but this is just soft sand. It is fun, though.

This lack of options is why I had to go meet frineds in Moab and Colorado last year for some awesome wheeling.

Sorry I don't have better advice, but Texas really lacks the large amounts of public land other western states have.

If you have time, go out to Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park some long weekend and try the trails out there. Those places are like being out in Utah or Arizona as they total over 1,200,000 acres and have miles and miles of trails which aren't terribly challenging, but have great desert scenery.

I'm putting together a group of people to go to Big Bend 28 Feb - 2 Mar. All are welcome to join me. I'll be making a thread in the next week about it in the Texas sub forum.

It's going into future plans. I usually end up getting 2 - 3 days loose about every 12 days. It's just difficult to make plans for specific dates. You guys have fun, and post up some pics.

I did visit Fort Davis out there about 18 months ago while I was working near Pecos. It is a well preserved old Cavalry fort north of Big Bend. And that is some beautiful country to drive through.
