Planning spring break trip to moab (trail advice and possible meet up)

I'm jealous. Down south we have nothing really. Some beaches, some nice National Forests, but nothing like the scenery out west.

Its awesome. Half the time I wonder why we even leave the state. Nothing compares.

I'll second most all of what he said.

Rock sliders are definitely not necessary IMO - at least for the trails you've mentioned. I drove a stock runner through hell's revenge, and it was the first trail I ever did in my entire life. No rocker damage whatsoever, not even a chance that I was close, ever. The frame rails hit first usually. IF you think you have a chance of bashing your rocker panel, don't be afraid to stack some rocks to avoid it. There's always rocks nearby for stacking.

Also, I agree, BFE is basically a waste of time unless you're going to play on gnarly crap with a tube buggy. You would be pretty disappointed, just sayin'

I already have rock sliders on so I should be fine there, even if they arent getting smashed into rocks they make a nice jack point. I kinda had that impression of BFE from some videos Ive seen so going and watching isnt high on the priority list.

Oh yeah, and be prepared, poison spider mesa is probably one of the best trails ever. But it's suuuuuper long. Be prepared to spend all day there. I've actually never finished the whole thing. But I stop for lunch and take pictures/videos often.

PSM and top of the world were the two trails that we were planning on spending a full day on each.

I think a trip to Area BFE will be a waste of time unless you want to watch other vehicles.

JMO....

Better off hitting both Fins N Things and Hell's Revenge on separate days if necessary...in that order.

Personally I would allocate some time to visit some of the awesome scenic trails as well or even the parks. Top of the World is great but there are a lot of other places to consider. Here are some pics from my trip, specifically in Canyonlands just 45 mins from Moab proper. The rest are in the album linked. All of these pictures were taken Trailside, no drone. That black dot in lower right corner of the third picture is my truck.

- You can drive through White Rim in < 10 hours and still take lots of pictures, no special permit or reservation is required. Frankly the WR trail was the best scenic views I've ever seen. Simply amazing to be there.

Looks like a great trail, love the pictures. I dont think were gonna have time for it though. Ill definitely have to hit that up next time though

Hey another guy from Bozeman! My wife and I were debating between Moab and Zion for spring break (10th-14th for us because I have to be back to work) and we went for Zion because she can't handle much offroading and we both like hiking so we went the hiking route. Man I wish I was able to go to Moab and hit trails with ya. We should do some runs up here in MT if you are interested, I am part of a Toyota offroad group for MT based in Bozeman. Anyways have a great time in Moab, super jealous!

Ive seen you running around Bozeman a few times out on west main by the mall. Id love to get out on some trails with you guys so shoot me a PM next time your planning on heading out. What group is it?

So now after some more thinking and input from everyone the schedule looks the same minus the trip out to BFE and we will be doing fins on the 12th rather than the 11th.

I also was looking to hit some sand dunes while Im out there, is there anywhere closer to moab than the white wash dunes that would still be fun.

The absolute most scenic trail I've driven in my life is The White Rim trail in canyon lands. If you leave Moab by 7:30am you can drive it all in one day, assuming it is spring or Summer.

This trail is incredible. Many people take multiple days. Camping reservations are very hard to come by. The is no permit needed to just drive the trail.

So much scenery. It's life changing and worth the full day.

x2 on that. Ive done the trail over 3 nights (with permits) on my mtn bike and it is the most amazing views I've ever seen. My favorite camp was the "Air Port" Our sag wagon was an 87 Toyota Privia and a Honda Passport.

Your 4Runner can totally make it on that one. Be prepared in Moab I've seen it snow in the morning and in the low 90's in the afternoon.

It is NOT accurate to imply a reservation or special permit is needed for a daytime drive, although the NPS website implies just that.

The day use permit only refers to the day pass access to the national parks. I found this out firsthand after viewing the NPS website and mistakingly believing I needed to buy a special White Rim day use permit. It is the same $10 Canyonlands pass you pay to access Arches, in fact if you already bought a 7 day pass then you don't even need to check in at the range station.

In summary ..... The NPS language is misleading and there is no Special permit or Reservation needed in order to daytime "drive through" Canyonlands National Park, including the White Rim trail.

My impression was that the NPS discourages people from doing daytime drives and may even tell you it can't be easily done. The pure length of the trail ensures it is empty, especially on a weekday.

Camping reservations are absolutely required by law.

I buy the National Parks annual pass, a lot of the places in NM (State parks, National forest included) require a $2-5 fee to gain access to trail heads.This just makes it easier, I don't have to worry about having a few bucks in my wallet at all times.

Will do, it is a group called 406 cruisers. Mostly land cruisers but a few of us 4runners, Tacoma's and pickups.

There are some dunes in Idaho not all that far away. The club here has 2 trips planned for this summer to go there I believe, I want to go to them as well. Could have last summer but didn't work out.
