Plasti-dip: I promise I'm stopping now

I've always wanted a little contrast on my 02 Thundercloud Sport... a little. So it came down to black wheels. Then when I got all set to plastidip them, I thought, why not try something a little more subtle, and I dipped the flares. I think I like it. Although I'm not 100% sure. I have no intention of dipping both the wheels and the flares since I think that's too dark and if I got the urge to dip the wheels I'd go with Anthracite anyway. But I do like the way it breaks up the line from shiny body to shiny wheels and sort of transitions it all.

Then I dipped the back hatch/bumper guard. It was faded and nasty looking. Definitely keeping that.

PS: Hitch is painted, not dipped. It was disgusting.

I can see now why some people go nuts with this stuff...but no more...I promise :banana:

im thinking that you might want to use a plastic paint on your rear step. Now I say this as a seasoned plasti dip user.As long as you dont repeatedly rub it or touch it much you will be OK. I did the center console trim on my 2010 and for the life of me i cant figure out why it would have been wearing to the point of splitting . this only happened near the clock right on the front edge there is a flat spot. Its not like I have a clock adjustment fetish. so I say plastic paint at least you wont be pealing and re applying when it gets beat up.
But yeah i like the way your flares turned out.

Plain old plasti dip black from Walmart. 4 coats. 1st coat very thin, just a nice dusting. Waited 30 minutes, then a heavier second coat until wet looking, waited 30 minutes. Third coat, wait 30 min then 4th. I was amazed at how far a single can goes. Bought 4 cans because I had intended on doing the wheels, and I ended up using 2 1/2 cans on all the wheel flares. Used half a can for the rear bumper guard...4 coats too.
 
This looks awesome, I love it. I also know what I'm doing this weekend now, thanks! My early SR5 flares look pretty faded and this will really help.

As someone who has never worked with plastidip, did you just spray the flares and then peel off the overspray on the paint? I think that's the point of plastidip, but i also heard it's tough to remove unless it is a decently thick coating. Thanks and sorry for the noob question, haha.
 
I would definitely mask it! Anywhere it isnt a thixk, uniform coat (i.e overspray) you will have to buff it off, and it might not uniformly peel away at the edge you want.

Tape off everything you don’t want oversprayed, but put your tape about an inch\half inch above the flares. You want this particular overspray for clean lines. You’re correct in the thickness, so spray the first coat as a dusting, then the other three coats (four?) pretty heavy. Remove all the tape and paper and just rub that one inch overspray with a finger and it’ll ball up. Then grab a piece and start to peel it off. It’s rubber so it’ll stretch as you pull. Just be easy and go an inch at a time. No need to cut lines between the body and flares, it’ll naturally break and you have a beautiful, crisp line. I had tons of unintended overspray because I didn’t feel like spending my entire afternoon taping, but a rubbing a dry cloth on it did the trick. Not much rubbing at all. Basically wiped off.

Also platidip sprays in a straight fan pattern, unlike paint which sprays in a round pattern. Easier to be accurate. Also, I read that it helps to soak your cans of plasti dip in a bucket of warm water for ten minutes prior to spraying. Loosens things up.

I'm a fan! Did my whole truck a few years back. 5 coats literally stayed on 2 years. I just peeled it last summer. Going to do it again this winter in a new color.
 
Thanks everyone for the advice! Sounds pretty easy to do and it'll definitely improve the look of my truck. I feel like this could get out of hand for me though too, haha. I already want to do my wheels now.

I love Anthracite but I don't love that it's hard to find and costly. Think Anthracite wheels would look funny with my black flares? Sweet looking rig, btw.

Anyone have photoshop skills that could make my wheels black?

What kind of bull bar is that?

Good deal, I will try that next time.

I had a not so positive experience with Rust-Oleum Peel Coat I tried to use on my 5th Gen. I masked the rear emblems and sprayed them, then I realized it was litteraly eating the paint off the rear emblem. Needless to say I did not get the results I was hoping for.
 
I plastidipped my stock rims this summer and love the new look. I think your right about all the shiny ...it breaks it up. looks good to me.
 
Thanks! Just the anthracite, didn’t use a clear. Was more of a test before I look for the anthracite TRD pro wheels to see if I like the color combo.
