Thinking about plasti dipping my SR5 OEM rims since trying to get a powder coater to do them in a timely fashion seems to be more problematic than I thought it would be. The powder coaters that I've talked to so far will only do it if the tires are already off the rims and removed from the vehicle. Since these wheels are my only set and I actually like the OEM rims, I'm considering going the plasti dip route. Anyone have any experience doing this? How did the plasti dip hold up from a durability standpoint? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm getting my Trail rims PCed. Hassle... a little but worth it. I'm getting mine done when I get get my new tires. I'm going to put my 4Runner on jack stands. Take off rims and tires. Take to discount tire. Have them stripped. Take them over to my powder coater. He'll coat in one day. Then I'll take back to discount and have them mount and balance new tires. Then I'll install on my rig. Pretty easy as long as you have a buddy or family member willing to help.

Follow the directions. Layer the dip. The more, the better. It'll last just fine. My spare set of rims and winter tires do just fine through the snow, sand, salt, and power washes. Going on 4 winters now.
Top it off with their glossifier if you want to smoothen out the rough dip texture and to make cleaning the rims easier.

I wanted a new look for my 2006 Tundra so after watching a few how-to vids on YouTube I decided to plastidip my wheels. All the videos I saw showed them painting the wheels while still on the vehicle. I figured the 2 minutes it would take to remove the wheel it would be more than worth it. I cleaned the wheel then applied 5 coats of gunmetal grey and 2 coats of glossifier. I stopped after one wheel to be sure I liked the look. I remounted the wheel and drove around for a day to decide on the look. The wife and kids thought it was funny but I'm glad I did. I preferred the stock look so I peeled off the plastidip. It took me one can of grey, one can of glossifier, and an hour of time. The finished product looked good but not enough to do all 4 wheels. My advise is to cover the tires. The videos oversprayed plastidip on the tires then rubbed it off once dry. However, all the tiny lettering and grooves on my BFGs made it kind of a pain.

Plastidip is easy to apply and fairly cheap.
