So I have a 06 sr5 stratosphere mica t4r and it has the "chrome plastic" grill, handles, and licence plate trim pieces. Reading up on some fj forums about using a plastic safe removal chemical(dot3 brake fluid, etc) to remove the paint to reveal the bare black plastic. So my question is has anyone done this to theres? Pictures would be great, im highly considering doing this inlue of getting paint matched pieces. Or possibly painting over a low glow black. I think the plastic fades pretty quick so paint would probably be the route.

I've never done this personally, but I've heard a good bit about people using fine grain sand paper on the chrome, priming and then spraypainting black and they all seem to be quite happy.

Did that same thing on my old S60R grille and it worked great. That self etching primer is key, or any adhesion promoter.

there is a mod on here somewhere of a black plastic spray that people used on their bumpers and such as a protection against rocks and small debris. I thought about using it on the chrome for this very reason... but it got cold out. I may still do it but there were some good pics of people who did the same thing. cant remember if it was in here or general discussion (pretty sure it wasnt 3ed or 5th gen)
sorry I cant be of more help, but its pretty interesting because after you want to go back, or want to reapply, you can just peal it off and do it again... or leave it off

That's a neat idea...will the Oven-off just melt the chrome and not the plastic?
Wish i'd known this method sooner.

I used this method as well just a few days ago. I let it work its magic for about 10 minutes, rinsed with water, and all was well. The fake chrome was gone, and everything was still smooth. I dont know how it will do on all plastics, but it worked well for my headlights.
heard about the oven cleaner too. looks like ill be grabbing a can or 2 and start the mods. front grill and back licence plate bracket for now and ill get into the handles later. will apply meguires protectant for the first couple months so it wont fade, should be good after that. Will post pics soon after.
