Mine is different. rectangular credit card style and at the center is the metal key.

I have the plastic key card, mine came from a Gulf States Toyota dealer.
Not sure why you would not want one, you never know when you might get locked out. Just make sure it works first.

Re: spare key

I didn't get a plastic key, but I did have a spare key (no chip) made, $1.98.

I hide it on the 4R, I Then hid one of the 'original' keys inside.

This way if is lock my regular keys inside, I can get in. Also, if I LOOSE my keys, I can get in AND get home.

If a thief finds the hide-a-key, he can get in, but can't steal it.

Note: You need one of the original black keys to program new keys (from the dealer) so that is why I hid a black key inside the rig.

With all this talk about plastic keys, I'm going to go to AAA and get a plastic key made.......if they still do that.

If you lock the car with the alarm fob and then open it with the plastic key, doesn't the alarm go nuts?

Yes, it is based on region. When I bought a new Runner in Maryland they sent me a plastic key. When I bought my newest Runner in Carolina, not even a welcome letter.

The keyless entry pad Ford has looks silly, but can be very useful.

Do they have a patent on it? I've never seen another manufacture offer one.

Accessory shops will install the keypad entry. I checked this out when I traded an Explorer for my 4R. Can't recall the exact cost but about $400. Never did get the guts to let them cut into the door. THere is also a wireless keypad that would stick-on but was told that it was incompatible with the 4R at that time.

I got one of those plastic keys and it was worthless! I went back to the dealer and got it cut and the first time i tried it out it just stripped the key markings. It's a great idea but it wasn't strong enough to turn the lock. I just went to Walmart and got a metal key as a safety in case i lock my keys inside.

I didn't get one. Good idea about a real spare inside and plastic outside. Wish I got one with mine. Maybe I should also get a $2 spare one made.

Funny with my BMW I got a plastic key here in CA. The sales guy told me to keep it in my wallet. Came in handy 6 months later.

Hmm...didn't mean to open up a can of worms! heh...Well I guess a few people found it handy to get into the car even though it wouldn't start the engine.

It's weird that it would be a regional thing. It should be given to everyone in my opinion.
