Plastidip 5th Gen Wheels?

:happens:same thing happened to me...but i was using a impact...simple fix though maybe 30 mins and a new 5 dollar bolt from autozone

...can anyone recommend me a reliable and accurate torque wrench that wont break the bank?

We should never use an impact wrench to torque lug nuts. Sure way to weaken, break or strip bolts/nuts, unless the wrench has a way to limit torque to known value. The sad fact is most commercial mechanics do use the impact wrench, and no way would they set torque value for every car they work on. - That's one of the reasons I want to work on my own vehicles if I have time and equipment

An inexpensive torque wrench from auto stores with a dial indicator and that relies on metal flexing should be good enough for lug nuts. It is a significant improvement over using the impact wrench.

Practically? I've always torqued with my 135 lb body weight split between hands on car body and a foot on tire wrench. Worked for 25 years and on 6 vehicles.

Nope. The best way is to NOT mask the tires at all. Paint your wheels with Plastidip and let it dry. Use your hand to rub the Plastidip off the tire- it will come off easily and leave the wheel untouched.

So got two wheels Plastidipped and went great, UNTIL I was putting it back on and as I was tightening it with HAND RATCHET, then bolt snapped off in the nut!. FML

I did that once. I typically leave my torque wrench spec'd for my current vehicle but then I used it for something else and forgot to change it back. I over-torqued about 50 lbs and snapped it. It was on a car not a T4R, but I bought the stud from a dealership for about $6. Removed the wheel and the dust shield on the back of the caliper. After the backside was clear I tapped on the front of the stud with a screwdriver and mallet until it popped out. Then placed the new stud and bolted everything up. It was a pain, but lesson learned.

Since this thread was brought back to the top, and I am the original poster, I thought I would update all. The plastidip has been holding up great, and I will be removing it my next tire rotation just to see how easy it is to remove.

I will keep everyone updated once removed.

Also with regards to prep, some folks say if you mask/cover the wheel and then spray the tire with a solvent based tire shine, you can remove the masking from the wheel and then spray the heck out of the tire and wheel with the plastidip and it will come right off the tire without any hassle.

Only use a water based tire shine after your wheels are dipped or the dip will come off.

I plastidipped my SR5 wheels over a year ago (see my build thread). The stuff is really tough, way more so than expected. To answer your questions:

You do not need to mask the tire at all, and you won't need any tire shine on there either. I cleaned the wheel and tire very very good with a quality wheel cleaner, then I wiped the wheel down with alcohol to get rid of any greasy spots. After spraying, the dip rubbed right off the tire with basically no effort.

I used all sorts of tire shine while I had my wheels on there, in fact I sprayed the wheels directly sometimes to give them a little gloss. It held up extremely well with no adverse affects. In fact I just spent over 2 hours removing the dip from one(!) wheel of the set so I can put them up for sale. It seems like it sticks better over time, but it still comes off cleanly.

Hey guys...probably overkill but trying to decide which color to plastidip my SILVER limited. Gunmetal or matte black....help a brother out! Going to do all the emblems, the roof racks and perhaps the wheels once I see how it looks. Suggestions?

Four Coats, 4-1/2 cans.

Not bad for $30 in paint. Nice look and pretty simple.
I'm planning to get them powder coated once I need to buy new tires.

Looks sweet! I know its an old post...but it's giving me hope to change the looks of this chromed out Limited. Recently blacked out the rear pillar with a vinyl wrap....LOOKS SWEET! (yet a little discreet, as a lot of people don't even notice it) Thanks for the post!

My rims are beat up from wheeling, I might mess around with some plastidip. Could be a fun little experiment.
