PlastiDip Rims Updates Request

I have seen a lot of awesome results from PlastiDip rims but the only times I have seen them is right after they have been painted. I am requesting pictures of before/after pictures and time frames of the rims. Of course longer time frames the better. Also what upkeep you've had to do, advice, problems you've encountered and if you would do it again. Thanks!

do they paint over the plasti dip?

what is the point when you could just prime and paint them for a better result.
 
Some people clear over the PlastiDip. I guess the perks of PlastiDip would be that it can be removed without damage to the rims and no prep work is needed. Just clean the rims, spray them and let dry.
 
I plasti-dipped my LX rims and spray painted over them, but that was only a few weeks ago. I did the plasti-dip first because my rims were chrome plated and the primer wouldn't adhere to the chrome as well as the plasti-dip. Mine are holding up great, but I haven't taken them off-road yet.

Zachpins34 has plasti-dip on his Ivan Stewart rims and they are holding up last time I saw him. The looked really good as well.
 
Washed mine today after several months and they still look good and are holding up. Very happy...about to do the whole 4Runner :)
 
I did my front bumper valance..and it tor on me......didn't clear over though...so planning on doing a clear or satin finish on it to seal it properly....
 
I plasti-dipped my stock rims about a year ago, still holding up strong. No chipping, no peeling, nothing. I even pressure wash the crap out of them. The key is using a whole can on each wheel so that it's thick enough. On my work comp. so no pics, sorry.
 
Also a simple tip on masking: use index cards or something similar to create a ring around the rim by wedging them in betweeen the rim and the tire. I think it's been mentioned before, just thought i'd throw that out there

I used 1/2 can per wheel, came out great, still holding up good :)

Mine have been holding up great- painted them over the summer(check my build thread). NO need at all to mask the tire- sounds strange but true! Paint the wheel and when your done rub the Plastidip off the tire with your hands. Just make sure you mask the valve stem, and the seating surfaces for the wheel lugs(I used big fenderwashers) and pull the mask off while the paint is wet to avoid pulling it off the rim. :)
 
I think the major trick for longevity, is getting a thick coating. Other wise Ive heard it flakes off.

I didn't place any clear coat on mine and like I said are holding up.
 
Thanks for all the replies. Would it be easier to paint them before or after putting them on the tires? I am thinking after to avoid the tire place taking off the paint during the install.

A couple of pics of my project rims. Picked them up for $250 (4 rims, 4 tires, 4 center caps, 20 lugs and 4 locking lugs), pretty good I think.

I dont have any direct experience with plasti dip but as far as any sort of painting/prep work goes i would highly recommend removing the wheels.. for the time it take as opposed to squatting in the right position to spray.. as well as possibly having to tape off your rig.. just way easier to take off and hit the small spots like between your lugs

Yeah i would say after.. I just swapped out my tires and the tire shop messed them up a little around the lip part but nothing major.. So i had to repaint over that this past weekend..

Long story short paint the wheels after.. Just my 2 cents
 
That's what I was thinking but it's just so much easier to paint them without the tires on. Either way I am still working on them, filling in some curb rash spots and getting them smooth.

Yeah its not too bad.. Just use index/playing cards and will make it a lot easier dont forget to tape up your valve stem as well..
