PlastiDip Wheels - How Much Do I Need?

Thinking about taking the plunge and Plastidip'ing the wheels on my '06. Question for you guys with experience, how much did you need to do a nice, even coating on all four wheels? My wheels are 17in. Thinking about anthracite, gunmetal grey, or black.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Tips?

Sand them. A can a wheel. Plus 1 to be safe. Buy cheapest color for base 3 cans (gun metal or black usually). Then buy top coat color 2 cans.

Mizak nailed it. One can per wheel, I'd suggest black. Then buy the color of paint you want, I like and used hammered gray rustoleum. Paint over the dip, makes it like a permanent removable color you like, if you don't like the color try another over first paint. Did this several times. It always comes out smooth as well.

Absolute overkill.

Prep. Prep prep. Clean and dry. Two cans to be safe. You'll want follow up touch ups.

This. With over a dozen wheels under my belt, it's all about the prep. Don't sand them, you'll ruin the wheel should you decide to peel off the plasti-dip down the road.

- Clean well, you may use an alcohol base - let dry
- 2 Cans Total + Clear (if you want) 1 Can for 2 wheels is plenty. 2-3 solid coats and optional clear should you choose.
- Go Slow, Take your time, let dry before second/third quote.

Do you guys pull the wheels off to paint, or ok to paint with them mounted?

Once you get to the bottom quarter of the cans they tend to start spitting and finish with a sandy like texture...

Now prepping by sanding. Your truck wheels are going on like 10 years old. Mine were pretty beat up... and are you really going to peal it off and go back to stock at any point on the factory rims? I doubt it.

I assumed you were taking the wheels off the truck and spraying the whole thing..

It's 4 cans that way and 1 to be safe..

It's tough to get certain colors at the hardware stores. And it's nice to have a spare bottle so you can touch up the faces of the wheels from time to time...

Thanks for the updates guys. Most sites seem to be dedicated to folks doing this for the temporary "look" on their cars. For me, I want to slow down the horrible chipping/flaking the Florida salt has caused my rims (and for looks).

What's the best pre-dip strategy for those chipped and peeling rims? I plan to pull the wheels off the truck of course but I'd rather leave the tires mounted. I'm in the process of getting new tires so the plan is to have them mounted then do all the prep and dipping. Yes, I don't expect to ever peel this and go back to the standard finish so a bit of sanding and wire-brush work is to be expected.

Years ago I had a similar idea to repaint a set of wheels on an old Honda. I didn't realize at the time that the face was machined then clear coated while the inside of the spokes were actually painted. They turned out horribly.... I'd rather not repeat that. I know the dip isn't going to fill in the edges of the chipped areas perfectly (without spraying a dozen coats) but I'd like to camouflage them as much as practical.
