Please Help - keep 3rd gen or get new 4R??

Hello all:

I'm new to the forum and am hoping you could you share your collective insight on the following dilemma.

I own a gorgeous '98 V6 4R..........cool steel metalic SR5, with relatively low miles (59K). Have had a great experience, aside from the vehicle being slightly underpowered. I am drawn to the 4th generation vehicles, especially by the new V-8s being offered. So, I find myself in the quandry of wondering, "should I sell my 4R to upgrade to a new V-8 in early '06 when all bugs are worked out, or keep a vehicle which I really like?". My 4R is immaculate and I'm pretty confident I could get KBB, which is roughly $14,000.

FYI, most recent mileage on a 1600 mile road trip was 23 mpg.

What would you do if in a similar situation? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Well, he did say he had 59,000 miles, not 95,000.

keep your current 4R and save some $$$ every month which you would have spend on the new one. when you can buy it cash go for it.

Exactly what I was wondering haha

The 4rth gen's in its 3rd year, and the only notable change was the VVT-i V8, and the 5spd auto in the V6. Bluntly, these are Toyota engines and trannies, so there's no period needed to "work out the bugs."

Basically, your current 4Runner is not going up in value, so might as well trade/sell it while it's still worth a good buck and keep your difference cost to a minimum.

I had to make that same decision last year, as the lease on my '99 as up, and I had to decide if I wanted to buy it, or just get something new.

I had a '99 SR5 Highlander Edition with a 5 speed. I REALLY miss having the 5 speed. I wish they'd still offer them with a manual tranny.

Aside from that, I did pick up some nice options, but also lost a few options.

I do like the new one, but it just hasn't grown on me like the '99 did. My biggest gripes are the lack of a manual tranny, and the rattles that have plagued my '03.

I never took the time to figure out numbers for my 2000 V6 Runner, but on road trips I found fuel costs/consumption to be roughly the same with my 03 V8......and I drive like a retard on road trips haha


Could be that there are lots of grades and mountain passes around here, and the V8 has to work much less to go uphills tho.
