Couple Thoughts:
1) When Diesel is put into a gasoline engine it makes a ton of smoke, and she did not mention excessive smoke as an issue

2) Seems like leaded gasoline is still available in Africa (although being phased out); could that be a possibility? My understanding is that really messes up the catalytic converter when unleaded gasoline is not used, and it also causes engine 'bucking' and hesitation according to this website:
