Please help me. Any ideas of what is happening?

I am a healthcare worker going to work with doctors without borders in Africa for a couple years. I wanted a reliable car to use for the years I

1st off make sure the down hill asist button is not pressed on the upper center console. You can't go over 25 mph with that mode on. 2nd disconnect the battery and reconnect to reset the CPU. 3rd - if someone jumped the battery, they might have reversed the jumper cables and messed up the CPU.

That's all I know. Good luck!

Your car may be set in 4L and that why it makes a bit more noise. Try this: press brake pedal, set shift to N and then tun swithch for drive mode(on the right of steering wheel) to 2H or 4H. Wait a few seconds, it should engage and then shift to D and drive. Also turn off differencial lock on the left of steering. That should turn most of the lights off. If your car is V8, I think it has only 4H, no 2H(2 wheel drive). As for A/T oil temp, this could be a problem, in cany case it is good idea to change transmission fluid.

Damsel in Distress!!

When you turn the key to the on position without attempting to start your vehicle what lights up?

When you attempt to start the 4Runner what happens?

Does a symbol stay on saying 4lo?

Do all your lights work?

If the vehicle starts, and when the vehicle is in Park, if you depress the accelerator what happens?

Let's go members. She is in A F R I C A !

Thank you all for the feedback and sorry for not responding sooner. I have limited internet access here.

I disconnected the battery and reconnected as you suggested. The battery seem to be ok as all the lights are working. The car will start but will not move when put in drive.
The steering wheel shakes

There is no response between the accelerator and engine. Usually when the car is in park and you depress the accelerator the engine sound should get louder.....but it doesn't.
Also when you depress the accelerator the trachometer only stays between 1 and 2. It doesn't get any higher.

I contacted the Toyota office here and they have no clue what is going on. They told me the Toyota vehicles made for USA market is different from the Toyota vehicle made for Africa market. ( who knew? ). Since they specialize in Toyota vehicles made for Africa, they have limited experience in dealing with my vehicle. They advised I find someone who has experience in .......American cars.

Imagine that! Since when did Toyota become an American car? Well, they claim the Toyota cars made for America come with lots of powered features, while most of the cars for Africa come with manual features.

Since I cannot depend on them to help fix the car, I guess you guys are the only help I have.

Thanks a bunch

You need to pull the check engine light code. Also, your A/T temp light being on is not good. VSC and TRAC lights go on by default when the CEL trips.

As others said, are you sure you're not in 4L and have the Downhill Assist button engaged?

Why did you not get a Land Cruiser Prado? I am sure they sell them in Africa as its the same car as the 4runner.
Sorry I couldn't be more help - but where did you get the car, craigslist, ebay, a dealer??

Contact Toyota Headquarters by phone. Tell them your problem and follow up with an email to the email address they provide. Keep records. Insist that Toyota send someone to your location. The squeaky wheel typically gets the grease. Also consider telling them that the local office for Toyota has not been helpful. Making them politely uncomfortable might get them out to see your vehicle. Toyota has reps world wide they are a cell phone call away.

Did you drive this vehicle prior to shipping it to Africa and if so was everything working at that time? If so, contact the shipping company detailing the situation by mail. Follow up on that with a phone call.

Did you supervise the vehicle being loaded on the ship? If not where did you drive it to and did they drive the vehicle?

I know that you must have little if any time so this problem may be better solved when you return to the USA. However in the meantime document document and document.

If none of the suggestions from members are helping it would appear as if somehow your vehicle has suffered a serious failure.

since your vehicle does not change revs when you depress the accelerator have someone check to see if the accelerator cable is connected while you depress it

It's all drive by wire, the accelerator cable is non-existent. There is however and throttle position sensor that relays driver throttle input to the ECU which then gauges how fast to rev the engine.

This will sound silly...nobody filled your car with Diesel when you werent looking, did they? I assume that the majority of cars in Africa are diesel and someone could have made a simple mistake.

would that explain a depressed accelerator and no revs? I'm afraid I dated myself:biggrin2:

certainly, it isnt unheard of them failing prematurely - look at the the recent thread about the guy whose sensor was stuck @ full throttle while on the highway.

There are very small differences between the US and African/European models - they are running you around.

It does sound like you may have diesel in the fuel tank when you would normally need (min) 87 octane.

Diesel in the gas tank is a good possibility.
Also, did the shipping company put something on the drive train components to immobilize it during shipping?

Isn't it regulation to drain most of the fluid to make transport easier? Should call the shipping company.

If they needed to drain fluids then did they drain the transmission by mistake thinking they were draining the oil? A dry or low tranny would explain shuddering and the A/T temp light. Also, check your oil level. Don't try and start it again if it's low on oil. Who prepped the vehicle for transport and who released it? Was it the same company?
