Please help

I know very little about part names, and I have a vital part that is broken and in need of replacing. If I order it through my local Toyota dealership and have them service it, I'm looking at damn near $500 that I won't spend. I have a buddy with a shop that'll do it, but I really need to know what it's called so that I can locate the correct part. Any input would be greatly appreciated. There are two bars connecting my rear end to the frame. The one on the right side broke at 75 mph Sunday on my way to church with the mom. What is this? See attachments. THANKS

That's a control arm, and breaking it at 75mph is a Bad Thing. Glad to hear you're ok, good luck with the repair!

Cool! Thanks for your speedy response. It sucked and of course, Toyota wants me to throw them an arm and a leg to fix it. I like the $160 price much better than the $208 Toyota quoted, but I think I can get it cheaper if I pull-a-part. Now, if I used car-part.com and searched "control arm, rear lower", would it be under "trailing arm" or "locating arm"? It's a 2004 SR5.

If I were you, I would take this chance to replace both of them with strong units.

Check out toytecs site, you can get better than factory replacements for less money.

I freakin love y'all. It has been so frustrating for me in finding this part. I really like the quality look of the AllProOffroad ones. I think I'm just gonna bite the bulleit and get those. After that I think all I'm looking at is labor and an alignment.

You're welcome. The All Pro ones are sharp! I'll probably get a set before long. They're adjustable for lifted vehicles too.

Labor? This is simple if you've got basic tools. Save yourself the money and install them yourself. I don't see any reason that you'd need an alignment either just from installing these.

Isn't alignment only for the front end of our trucks? That's what I heard because we have a solid rear end and there's no steering components back there. Could be wrong though.

There is alignment for the rear too. When I took my vehicle to Brakes Plus to get the front end aligned they checked the rear also. They said they always check all 4 wheels for alignment now. It was within specs so they didn't do anything to the rear, just the front.

Both my dad (physicist/mechanical engineer) and the local shop here confirmed what stevec5000 said. That's wild to me but makes kinda good sense for tire wear issues caused by a thrown rear end. It baffles me that the rear end is only held onto the frame by two flimsy pipes. I'm going with the AllProOffroad set since I plan future additional lift and for their warranty (it's sick). My guy is doing the labor for a killer 50 bucks. I think I'm better off in the end, rather than going with the flimsy OEM crap. Y'all have been most helpful...thank you again.

Yes, there is rear end alignment. I think it's a rarity that it go out. Rear out of alignment many times signifies that there are damaged suspension components.

But no, the rear suspension is definitely a lot more complicated than 2 flimsy pipes. All the trail arms do is let the axle move up and down in a controlled manner while keeping them positioned properly front to rear. You've got many more links that hold the axle in place including; upper control arms, track-bar (or pan-hard bar), sway bar links and even your shocks.

Yep you're absolutely correct. Rear adjustments pertain to independent rears. Doesn't mean there isn't an rear "alignment" spec for solid axles though.

installing adjustable links will do it.
unless you know they are set to the exact same length as the oem arms, and the same length as eachother.

Yeah true. AllPros come set to factory length.
